Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / WTK: Projector Repairs
« on: March 04, 2009, 10:54:28 AM »
At my office there is a projector that needs repairs.

It is a Sony VPL-CX70 portable projector

http://www.sony.com.au/catalog/product.jsp?id=VPLCX70

A user damaged the lens cover by failing to properly turn the projector off via the power button before unplugging it.

When you try to turn it on, you hear a whirring sound of the motor trying to open the lens cover, but the cover opens only partially. While you can force the cover open and closed, I prefer if it works as advertised.

Anyone knows  of a projector repair specialist in the west/POS area? Info would be appreciated.

DENDERMONDE, Belgium (AFP) — A 20-year-old Belgian man armed with a long knife and wearing face paint killed two infants and an adult in a rampage at a creche on Friday, officials said.

Ten children and two staff were wounded, some seriously, in the attack in the town of Dendermonde near Brussels, prosecutor Christian Du Four said as anxious parents gathered to identify the victims and injured.

The man, who had his face painted white with black around his eyes, rang the doorbell at the The Country of Fables day-care centre at about 10:00 am.

After staff opened the door, he barged in with a 30-centimetre (12-inch) long knife and ran amok slashing at some of the children as they lay in beds, officials said.

The suspect escaped on a bicycle but was detained nearby.

"The guy just went crazy," said Theo Janssens, the Dendermonde deputy mayor for social affairs. "There was blood everywhere, it was unbelievable, real carnage," he told AFP with tears in his eyes.

"He went straight for the babies and attacked them," Janssens said.

"The smallest ones were in their beds, they were probably asleep."

One child and one adult died at the scene while a second child later died from the wounds. Eighteen children were in the creche at the time, officials said.

Ten children, including the two most seriously injured, and two adults underwent surgery and were out of danger, a doctor, Ignace De Meyer, told reporters.

Parents gathered in the Dendermonde town hall and, with psychologists in support, identified the victims using photographs.

Du Four said the suspect entered the building by saying that "he had a question he needed to ask somebody."

"He quickly pulled out a knife and started using it on the children," the prosecutor added.

"He then went up to another floor and started doing the same thing again" he said. The man's face was smeared with white and his eyes were blackened, the prosecutor said.

Six women members of staff tried to put themselves between the attacker and the children. One was hacked to death and two others were wounded in the legs or shoulders, officials said.

The suspect quickly fled but was picked up by police a few kilometres (miles) away, officials said.

"He didn't panic, yes, he was calm," a man who lived next to the creche told RTL-TVI television, describing the suspect as extremely thin and tall.

Du Four denied rumours that the suspect had escaped from a psychiatric ward or was high on drugs or alcohol.

The prosecutor refused to identify him except to say he was a 20-year-old Belgian from the region. He said the man has not spoken about the attack.

"There is enough incriminating evidence to bring him before the investigative magistrate and get an arrest warrant," Du Four said, adding that the murder weapon was found.

A woman at the day-care centre said that the man was not known to staff.

"We are horrified by the events. Our thoughts go out to the families and staff of the creche. Many parents are in a state of shock," Interior Minister Guido De Padt told the press conference.

The tragedy is one of a number of deadly attacks at schools or child care centres in Europe in recent years.

Belgium is still in shock over the case of a woman who cut the throats of her five children and a series of paedophile scandals.

"The country is in shock and sorrow at this horrible act of violence committed in a society that strives to live in harmony and peace with everyone," said Prime Minister Herman Van Rompuy in a statement.

After the attacks, children were sent to different hospitals and parents' anxiety was increased as authorities could not immediately identify which child had been sent to each hospital.

"I saw a lot of parents and grandparents who were wondering what was going on," said one onlooker, Hilda Diercks.

"There was a bit of panic in the schools and the children didn't dare go home because they thought the guy was still on the loose."

Sex shop sicko

A PERVERT has twice broken into a Cairns adult shop and had sex with blow-up dolls before abandoning the vinyl vixens in a nearby lane.

However, police are on his tail, because the thief left his DNA on a doll and possible fingerprints on its face along with three other inflatable dolls and lubricants.

Business owners believe the same culprit is responsible for break-ins and till thefts at the Sapphire Bar on Lake St and three break-ins at the Laneway Adult Shop off Spence St in the past several days.

His method of entry is to smash through walls and squeeze through tight holes.

The owner of the adult shop, who wished to be named only as Vogue, said that in a first unreported break-in at his recently opened shop, the doll-snatcher had stolen five dolls and had sex with one of them.

“He has been taking the dolls out the back and blowing them up and using the dolls and leaving them in the alley,” he said.

“It is totally bizarre.

“It is a real concern that someone like that is out on the street.”

Vogue said a sex toy also went missing in the second break-in and that the offender had a liking for the doll model named "Jungle Jane", which had been taken on both occasions.

He said he was dumbfounded that the burglar also had the "weird" habit of cleaning up the mess he had made after entering the building.

Not content with his first two midnight liaisons, the burglar again smashed through a wall in the roof area of the shop on either Monday night or early yesterday morning but was scared off by a newly installed alarm system.

Vogue and David Sharman, the owner of the Sapphire Bar on Lake St that has a rear entry in the same lane as the adult shop, both believe they have been targeted by the same thief.

Both men said fleeting video images showed the burglar as being a tall, skinny Caucasian.

Mr Sharman said of the break-ins and two thefts of money from the till, as well an attempted break-in on Sunday night, the most brazen was in the early hours of yesterday morning.

"The burglar smashed a hole near the top of the roof line," he said.

"He then clambered 15m down a sheer wall.

"He (only) took the surveillance recorders - we found them in the bin."

While praising police for their quick response to the alleged crimes, Mr Sharman said he was becoming increasingly frustrated that they were not being solved.

"I have had a gutful. This pushes up costs," he said.

"Crime is killing our business.

"Not enough is being done to prevent early morning crime in the CBD."

Cairns Police District crime prevention co-ordinator, Acting Sgt Cary Coolican, said the reported offences were being
investigated.

It is understood at this stage of investigations the alleged offences are not being linked.

Acting Sgt Coolican said in the case of the adult shop, scientific officers had taken DNA samples, fingerprints and
pictures.

"We are certainly asking anybody with any information to come forward and contact Cairns police on 4030 7000 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," she said.

I guess they'll charge him for "entering and breaking"

Sick Sad World / Brothers Stab Each Other Over PS2 Game
« on: December 29, 2008, 03:59:00 PM »

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Stabbing-controller-PlayStation-2,news-3209.html

I know man used to get raunchy over gaming, but this??

Quote
You just have to wonder what the world is coming to when two grown adults stab each other over a  PlayStation 2 game

Last week, a report coming out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin claims that two brothers, both in their 30's, are looking at assault charges based on an incident filed Sunday, December 21. According to the Waukesha police, the brothers got into an argument over whose turn it was to play a PlayStation 2 game. Although the injuries were not life threatening, this incident just adds fuel to the fire in the eyes of politicians and other anti-game protestors wanting console and PC games removed from the consumer market.

The Waukesha Police said that the argument quickly turned from an argument into an all-out brawl. One brother thus began to choke the other until the offended brother whipped out a knife and began to cut the assailant brother's hands. Enraged even more, the assailant grabbed the knife and stabbed his brother in the chest. His hands bloodied, the assailant brother fled the scene. He later turned up at the hospital with severely frostbitten fingers.

The police did not specify what game actually sparked the brotherly slaughter (although the incident resembles a typical stage found in Mortal Kombat titles).

Recently another game-related incident went to court involving a teen shooting his parents over Halo 3, killing his mother and severely wounding his father (story). The shooting wasn't an accident either: after they took away the game, the shooter retrieved the gun and the game from his father's closet, went down to the living room where they lounged on the couch, and told them to close their eyes so he could give them "a surprise."

Games and violence are hot topics with politicians and parents alike. While the ESRB has a system in place to help parents filter through the various game styles available on the market, the overall conflict between the good and the bad aspects of gaming will always exist while game-related incidents take place. Of course, publishers and developers sneaking in adult-oriented content into rated titles doesn't help the situation.

But when two grown men fight over whose turn it is to play, one must wonder if gaming is taken too far at that point, that it eventually becomes an addiction and becomes integrated into the gamer's perception of reality. Games are supposed to be fun and entertaining, however many current titles feel more like simulators rather than something enjoyable to pass the time.

A forum dedicated to Shuttle XPCs:

http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/forums/viewforum/4/

History:

This shuttle was originally purchased in 2007, but the motherboard died/fried in its first or second use purchase by the original owner (some yatchie) and was parked up for over a year with daniboy.

This year I finally got around to resurrecting it. I purchased a new replacement board directly from Shuttle about 6 months ago (using the TT Directbuy people), added the necessary components and it worked with no fuss.

It was rented to a friend of mine from August to December 2008, and he had no complaints about its performance.

The only other quirk I can recall is that if installing XP and you have a dual core CPU, you have to manually choose the HAL type from a list of options  (very early in the install - even before the point where you supplied the disk for the RAID drivers) choosing "ACPI multiprocessor PC".

If you didn't do this, the performance would be degraded or even a blue screen, and you would have to reload windows to select the correct HAL type as per what the MS Knowledge article says:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299340

Windows Vista however runs fine with no hitches.

Known Issues:

1. Onboard sound does not work properly, so I stuck in a SoundBlaster PCI Audigy card. As a result the front audio jacks do not work either.

2. The front left USB port does not work - anything plugged in shows up as "device unrecognized". Research says it is due to some "SpeedLink" feature that shuttle put on the port. It can't be turned off and I also read the port does not get enough voltage. All other ports work fine.

3. The processor will show up as "AMD Processor model unknown" until such time as a BIOS update is issued.

4. Fastest video card I get to work in it was a GeForce 7900GS. Simply will NOT work with newer video cards (Tried a 8800GT and 8800GS. No dice). I would have liked to try an HD 4670 though.

Asking Price: $1800 negotiable.
Reasonable offers will be considered.
Arrangements for sale to any actual purchaser will be done as 2009 starts
Pics will come soon...

Legal papers served via Facebook

The documents were sent via a private email service on Facebook

An Australian couple have been served with legal documents via the popular social networking site Facebook.

Mark McCormack, a lawyer in Canberra, persuaded a court to allow him to use the unusual method after other attempts to reach them failed.

The couple's home is being repossessed after they reportedly missed payments on a loan of over A$100,000 ($67,000; £44,000).

It is believed to be the first time Facebook has been used in this way.

'Friends'

Mr McCormack says he resorted to Facebook to trace the couple after unsuccessful attempts to contact them at their home address and via email, and they failed to attend a court appearance on 3 October.

He found the woman's page, and used details listed there such as her date of birth to argue in the Australian Capital Territory Supreme Court that she was the person in question. Her partner was listed as one of her "friends".

In granting permission to use the social networking site, the judge stipulated that the papers be sent via a private email so that other people visiting the page could not read their contents.

"It's somewhat novel, however we do see it as a valid method of bringing the matter to the attention of a defendant," Mr McCormack said.

Text message

He said he thought courts would continue to use Facebook, as long as they were sure it was reasonably likely to come to the attention of those concerned.

In the past, the Australian courts have granted permission for people to be served with legally binding papers via email or even text message.

But this is the first time they have allowed the use of Facebook, says the BBC's Nick Bryant in Sydney.

Good thing I don't have a facebook profile - or bad credit history...  :happy0203:

Sick Sad World / Kid Shoots Parents Over Halo 3
« on: December 17, 2008, 04:16:45 PM »
Oh boy.. the US politicians who say to ban video games are going to jump all over this one:

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Halo-3-Shot-Parents,news-3153.html (quoted below)

http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/12/boy_killed_mom_and_shot_dad_ov.html (with pics of said boy)

Quote

A 17-year-old male shot his parents - killing his mother and wounding his father - all because they took Halo 3 away from him.

Thanks to this kid, you can now chalk another one up for politicians wanting to see the end of video games.

Way to go, buddy.

That’s probably a good summation of gamers worldwide after hearing Daniel Petric’s deadly retaliation. There’s nothing more sickening than violence related to games, especially sickening to those who depend on the medium as a source of income. Is this kid really a byproduct of electronic violence, or suffering the after-effects of a violent household? The vicious scenario, laid out by prosecutors during Monday’s trial, paints a familiar scene yanked from any crime drama.

According to the prosecutors, Daniel sneaked out of his bedroom back in September 2007, and later snuck back in with a tasty, just-purchased retail copy of  Halo 3. Banned from playing games of this nature, Daniel was forced to hand over the game once caught by his parents. Thus his father, Mark Petric, a minister at New Life Assembly of God in Wellington, took the copy of Halo 3 and locked it away in a lockbox located in his closet (which incidentally was the same place he kept a 9mm handgun tucked away).

A month later, Daniel broke into the lockbox and retrieved both the Halo 3 game and the 9mm handgun. Once both items were in hand, Daniel went downstairs and approached his parents as they lounged on the couch. He asked them to close their eyes, claiming the he had a "surprise." Mark Petric, 45, testified that he was actually expecting a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately, that pleasant surprise turned out to be a shot in the head, killing the mother and "gravely" wounding the father. Daniel immediately place the gun in his father’s hand, saying "Hey Dad, here’s your gun. Take it."

Mark, still alive, blood pouring from his bullet wound, his head numb, realized that his wife was dead. He believes that he is still alive because of his older daughter and son-in-law arriving at the house to watch an Indians game.

"You guys shouldn’t come in," he heard Daniel tell the couple outside. "Mom and Dad had a big argument."

Like some cue from a horror movie, Heidi and Andrew both said that they heard moans coming from inside the house, perhaps even calling out their names. After bursting into the house and investigating, they found the wounded father and dead mother. In response, Daniel picked up the gun, poised to kill, however Andrew managed to seize the weapon from the boy before any additional slayings occurred. Daniel fled in the family van, but was captured by police shortly thereafter, Halo 3 sitting in the front seat like some possessed Book of the Dead.

Now on trial, Daniel faces charges of murder and attempted murder. He is being tried without a jury before Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge. Daniel’s lawyer commented that the boy was under heavy stress at the time of the incident, as a snowboarding accident left the teen with a severe staph infection. The accident also caused severe spinal damage, and the slightest injury could leave him paralyzed as a result (but he can climb out a window and hike all the way to a retail store to purchase Halo 3). Daniel became familiar with the Halo franchise while recuperating for a year, lying around watching television and playing games. His parents eventually banned games like Halo 3, saying that they are too violent.

Lawyers prosecuting the case do not wish to seek the death penalty, and surprisingly enough, the boy’s family wants him home. In the year Daniel has been in custody, both father and son have mended bridges, and the family actually wants Daniel to come back home.

"You’re my son," Mark Petric said after Daniel apologized for what he had done. "You’re my boy."

Damn you Daniel!!!    :shakehead:
WTF were you thinking?  It's just a game dammit!!
I recenlty came off sweating a hardcore, 10 hour, 3 xbox, 10 man, Halo 3 sweat this weekend at a friend's house, and you go do this??

Arima man 500th murder
Gang, drug-related killings major cause of increase by 153 cases
Denyse Renne drenne@trinidadexpress.com

Sunday, November 30th 2008

T&T's murder toll reached 500 yesterday, with the latest murder victim identified as Wilfred Fredericks.

Fredericks, 20, of Bye Pass Road, Arima, was shot dead around 1.45 a.m. yesterday, while standing on Mahabir Lane, Arima. Police say Fredericks was approached by a lone gunman who shot him several times about the body.

Fredericks managed to run a few feet away before collapsing. He died at the scene.

Homicide detectives are yet to establish a motive for the murder.

So far for the year, gang and drug-related killings have contributed significantly to the upsurge in murders, while domestic brawls, altercations, robberies and collateral killings also accounted for a large percentage of murders.

Statistics further showed, of the 500 murders committed to date, only 71 have been detected, an increase of six, when compared to last year around this period.

Sunday Express' statistics also show murders have increased by 153, compared to the same period last year.

Region Two (North, North-Eastern, Eastern divisions) accounted for the bulk of detections, which currently stand at 43.

A senior homicide detective, commenting on Region Two's detection rate, said his officers "have been working tirelessly in an attempt to bring the perpetrators to justice".

"Several of my officers are called on their days off, and because of their dedication to the job they respond," the senior officer said.

Stating detectives under the supervision of ASP Johnny Abraham, Insps Stanley Ramdeen, Ancil Corbette and including Sgt Andrew Lawrence and PCs Sunil Ramoutar,Tyrone Jack, Kevin Thomas, Suzette Martin, Josaine Sampson-Johnson and Ameer Mohammed, just to name a few, the senior officer said Region Two's successes this year include the detection of nine murders which were committed in 2007, and also several others which were committed in 2006.

"Following investigations, two charges of manslaughter and attempted murder have also been laid," the senior officer said.

Numerous media conferences held by senior officials, including Acting Commissioner of Police James Philbert, who was appointed to the post on July 5, have tried to assure the public that officers are making progress in various homicide cases.

One such instance was the October 9 killings of elderly Swedish couple Ake Olsson, 73, and his wife, Anna Sulvan, who were found with chop wounds at their Bon Accord, Tobago, home.

Homicide detectives said then they believed that robbery was the motive and were expecting to lay charges soon.

Two suspects were arrested and subsequently released and an artist's sketch was issued to the public, but so far, detectives say they are still investigating the matter.

Express statistics further showed Tobago accounting for two cases of manslaughter and five murders.

Under Philbert's tenure, 229 murders have been recorded thus far.

Thirteen inquests have been ordered by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, while 17 killings are yet to be classified, since investigations are ongoing.

The unclassified killings include bullet-riddled bodies and autopsies, which have been inconclusive.

Inquests, manslaughters and unclassified killings do not form part of the Sunday Express' murder toll.

For the year thus far, 47 females between the ages of two to 65 have been brutally murdered, while 12 murder/ suicides were recorded.

Five law enforcement officers, inclusive of two police officers, along with one fire, prison and soldier were also murdered this year.

Seven State witnesses were also killed a month apart-Balliram Krishna Harripersad (February 11), Terrance Haynes (March 16), Harold Joseph (April 5), Ishmael Drayton and Daniel Roberts (May 1), Anthony Ryan (June 12) and Gabriel Charles (July 28).

Murders also took a toll on taxi-drivers who were plying their trade, with 17 drivers being killed for the year.

The murder toll recorded also included 30 persons who were reported missing by their relatives.

On September 19, National Security Minister Martin Joseph announced that the Special Anti-Crime Unit of T&T have been mandated to conduct investigations into gang-related killings.

Following the announcement, 53 killings involving gang members have taken place.

So far, May has been the bloodiest month, accounting for 56 murders, while June has the second highest with 55.

February accounted for 28-the least number of murders.

Any bets on the end of year figure???

Preference given to the 754.

Have a system under warranty where the system freezes and then BIOS screen gets corrupt when i try to reboot. Being on vacation, I'm just feeling too lazy to troubleshoot, thus condemning the board.

Budget: cheap, maybe around $200 or so. Must be in good working condition with a 30 day warranty.

They'll kill you for your body parts::

Quote
A six-year-old albino girl in Burundi has been found dead with her head and limbs removed, in the latest killing linked to ritual medicine.

Albinos in the region have been targeted because of a belief peddled by witchdoctors that their body parts can be used for magic potions.

The girl, who was attacked on Sunday, was the sixth person with albinism to be killed in Burundi since September.

There have also been a number of attacks in neighbouring Tanzania.

The latest attack took place in Burundi's eastern province of Ruyigi.

The BBC's Prime Ndikumagenge in Burundi said the child and her family had only just returned to their family home.

Armed attackers broke into the family home and tied up the girl's parents before shooting her in the head, local officials say.

They had been among a group of about 50 people with albinism to have fled to a provincial centre because they feared for her safety.

The head of the Burundi Albinos' Association, Kasim Kazungu, says people with albinism had not suffered any discrimination until other Burundians heard about the lucrative trade in albino body parts in neighbouring Tanzania.

Last week, police in south-western Tanzania arrested a man who was attempting to sell his albino wife to Congolese traders.

Two mothers in western Tanzania were also attacked with machetes after gangs failed to find their albino children.

Two mothers in western Tanzania have been attacked by gangs who were after their children who have albinism.

The women were hacked with machetes when the attackers failed to find the two children.

Albinos have been targeted in a series of killings around the country due to a belief their body parts can make magic potions more effective.

At least 30 people with albinism have been killed since March, including a seven-month old baby.

On Wednesday, attackers forced a woman to take them to her home, looking for her nine-year-old daughter in Kibondo District, close to the Burundi border.

The girl was not in the house and so the men attacked the mother.

In the second attack, a gang of four men broke into a house at the Lugufu camp in Kigoma, which hosts refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, looking for a child with albinism.

The child, aged two, escaped kidnap after falling under the bed unnoticed.

The women are undergoing treatment for their injuries.

High prevalence

On Thursday, police in south-western Tanzania arrested a man who was attempting to sell his albino wife to Congolese traders.

The BBC's Vicky Ntetema in Dar es Salaam says the attacks appear to have spread from north-western Tanzania, where they were first reported.

The attacks also suggest that there is interest in albino body parts from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi, our correspondent says.

The Kigoma regional police commander said the attackers had fled and a manhunt was underway.

The attacks on albinos have been linked to witchdoctors who are peddling the belief that potions made from an albino's legs, hair, hands, and blood can make a person rich.

President Jakaya Kikwete ordered a police crackdown on those involved in the killings in March, and 170 witchdoctors have since been arrested.

But BBC investigations suggest that some police are being "bought off" in order to look away when such crimes are committed.

The prevalence of albinism in Tanzania appears to be high and the Albino Association of Tanzania says the actual number of albinos could be as high as 173,000.

A census is now underway to verify the figures.

Anyone working with corporate e-mail servers, or just using email on the whole noticed you got far less junk mail today than usual?

Looks like an ISP that was a MAJOR source of spam  was taken offline today.

Spam on the whole dropped by 2/3 after Mcolo was taken offline. But knowing the bastards they will find new servers to start back send out their junk

Seems that up to now people STILL using Windows 3.x in one way or the other:

The end of an era - Windows 3.x

By Mark Ward
Technology correspondent, BBC News

Windows 3.x established the look of the operating system.

An application has expectedly quit.

Windows 3.x has come to the closing moments of its long life.

On 1 November Microsoft stopped issuing licences for the software that made its debut in May 1990 in the US.

The various versions of Windows 3.x (including 3.11) released in the early 1990s, were the first of Microsoft's graphical user interfaces to win huge worldwide success.

They helped Microsoft establish itself and set the trend for how it makes its revenues, and what drives the company until the present day.

High flyer

For many computer users 3.x was the first Windows-based operating system they used, and the software established the iconography of Microsoft's flagship product.

As it was updated the software started to make PCs a serious rival to Apple machines, as it could take advantage of much improved graphics, had a broader colour palette, and could use multimedia extras such as sound cards and CD Rom drives.

Microsoft maintained support for Windows 3.x until the end of 2001, and it has lived on as an embedded operating system until 1 November 2008.

Windows 3.x has found a role onboard some long-haul jet aircraft.

As an embedded system, it was used to power such things as cash tills in large stores and ticketing systems.

One of its more glamorous uses as an embedded operating system is to power the in-flight entertainment systems on some Virgin and Qantas long-haul jets.

Tech specs

Stefan Berka, who runs the GUI Documentation Project, said the important technical innovations in the software were its extended memory that could address more than 640KB and the improvements to hardware support.

The fact that it was 100% compatible with older MSDOS applications helped too.

Windows 3.x required an 8086/8088 processor or better that had a clock speed of up to 10MHz. It needed at least 640KB of RAM, seven megabytes of hard drive space, and a graphics card that supported CGA, EGA and VGA graphics.

By comparison, the Home Basic version of Windows Vista requires a 32-bit 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 20GB of hard drive space, and a graphics card with at least 32MB of memory.

Many people still rely on older operating systems.

"I haven't received an e-mail about Windows 3.11 for a long time," said Andy Rathbone, author of a Dummies guide to the software. "But I wouldn't be surprised if some people still use it."

Sales of the software still pop up on eBay, he said, but not at a price that would tempt him to part with his unopened copy of Windows 3.1.

Agent Quang from home IT support firm The Geek Squad, said he regularly encountered venerable operating systems in customer's homes but it had been a long time since he saw Windows 3.x.

"The majority of machines we run see are running XP," he said, "Vista is still a bit flaky here and there and people are not comfortable with it."

But, he said, Windows 95 and 98 were still popular with some customers.

"We see them on laptops and people are unwilling to let them go," he said. "It's perhaps because in the early days laptops cost a lot more money they do now, and there's much more perceived value there."

Agent Quang's personal favourite operating system was Windows 98 because, by the end of its life, the software was so solid.

Old Iron

He said anyone running an ageing operating system might face problems as they try to find a web browser that could run on it and display the latest online innovations.

"We had a case a while ago a customer with a Windows 98 machine trying to view her website and the pictures were just not coming up," he said. "Eventually we had to install Netscape Navigator to get it working."

Stefan Berka said he had recently re-installed Windows 3.11 on a computer and was surprised at the results.

"Personally, I had fun at my last Windows 3.11 test installation to make it a useful desktop operating system again," he said.

"With patched SVGA driver for 1024x768 resolution, Internet Explorer 5, WinZIP, VfW and Video Player, it was still useful," he said. "The desktop was ready after a few seconds loading time."

Said Mr Rathbone: "Windows 3.11 would still work reasonably well today, provided it only ran software released around the same time."

He cautioned against anyone considering returning to the olden days and using it as their mainstay operating system.

He said: "I wouldn't connect it to the internet, though, as it's not sophisticated enough to ward off attackers."
