AS shown in subject, I need this board.

Socket 939 with an AGP slot

Anyone knows where I can get one new,  it is greatly appreciated.

Reason for this particular board:  a client of mine is upgrading from socket A but can't afford to go DDR2 and PCI-E just yet. An asrock version exists, but we all know how Asrock performs...

alternative board suggestions (except asrock) welcome

Ole Talk / Strike Squad Memories
« on: November 19, 2006, 01:18:18 PM »
So today marks 17 years since the Strike Squad narrowly miss out on going to the World Cup on 1990

The "goal heard around the world" scored by Paul Caliguri at 4:31pm on that day.

So I ask:

Where were you on that day  if you were old enough to remember)? Your feelings at the time? Do share the memories!!

Do you think these now seriously aged men can undo the 'demons' against the USA today?

Sony PlayStation / Remember, your PSP can be a US Security risk!!

As if the story of dropped ipod in the toilet of an airplane wasn't bad enough:

http://psp3d.xhardwarereviews.com/index2.php?page=Hacking%20Wireless%20Networks%20With%20The%20PSP?

Quote
One doesn't often associate a child bearing a portable gaming console as a potential hacker, or, worse, a terrorist. We often disregard the PSP as a multimedia tool sincerely used for promoting happiness: watching movies, playing games, and listening to music. But how about using it for infiltrating top-secret clearance level data at some of the US's most prestigous intelligence agencies? The PSP has all the prerequisites. If homebrew programs can be made to emulate Nintendo 64, send phone calls, utilize GPS protocols, and more, with the measily, yet powerful 333 MHz CPU, what's stopping terrorists and malicious individuals from sending a child, armed with a PSP bearing a homebrew password brute forcer, to walk by the FBI Edgar Hoover building in Washington D.C. (who's wireless networks reach the public sidewalk alongside the building), and gather data which could be used to thwart the government which protects us? Is this one of the reasons why Sony wants to stop homebrew? There are so many possibilities.

This brings me to my own story. The other day, I parked my car on Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C., killing some time before an event I was about to attend further down in D.C. I whipped out my PSP, while sitting in the car, and pleasured myself to a round of Tekken: Dark Ressurection. Mind you, it was nearly dark outside, and the lights in the car were off. Roughly ten minutes into my game, I noticed a certain figure standing outside my car. I quickly shutoff my PSP, turned the lights on, and rolled down the window. To my surprise, it was a police officer. He asked me what I was doing at that very moment. Now, of course, I am an adult, and an adult playing a PSP in the dark, inside his car, on the busiest street in D.C. is pretty awkward, one would think. So I replied and explained my situation, that I was early heading to a nightclub, and wanted to feed my addiction to a new game I had just bought. He didn't buy it. Not one bit at that.

Maybe it was my sketchy behavior, I was excited for the night, it was a long and tiring week, and now I had to deal with the fact that I might get in trouble for something, knowing how police have a knack for finding trouble. He immediately yelled (not politely) at me and forced me to put my hands in the air, step outside the car, and place both hands on the side of the car. He then proceded to pat me down and handcuff me from behind, and then asked me to sit down on the curb. He peeked inside my car, with flashlight in hand, and thoroughly searched my car (lucky I didn't have my 6-pack next to me, as I originally planned to bring along). He picked up my PSP as evidence of "unusual behavior" and left to his car. There, I would assume, he traced my tags, performed a background check, and called in an additional police cruiser. He came out, and by now, the second cruiser had arrived with two additional men; they all came towards me. I was deeply interrogated. Why I was parked in front of a federal building at this time at night, why I tried to hide the item in my hands when the police officer had supposedly been yelling at me from the outside of my car, before I noticed he was outside, and what the 'real story' was. I started laughing, I knew nothing better to do at the time; these people thought I was a terrorist. They probably thought I was using the electronic device to decrypt confidential passwords, try to detonate some sort of triggered bomb, or something along those lines. Whatever the case, they let me go as they could find no real reason to arrest me, and I was relieved. Was that right there reasonable doubt? Did those police officers have the right to approach me like that? To this day the thoughts and words of that night still skim through my brain.

Now, I don't want to make this article a rant against the criminal system we have. I'm actually, in a way, pleased that these officers had thought about such malicious potentials from the handheld; this is what makes the US safe(r). What I really wanted to get at was the true possibilites of the PSP; there is really nothing stopping anyone with malicious intent to be in my exact same position that night, utilizing a homebrew password decrypter/brute forcer/MD5 decryptor/mini-rainbow table setup/wireless bomb detonator rather than playing Tekken. Had I been sitting in the car with a laptop on my lap, it would have been many times more suspicious. A portable device equipped with wireless capabilities and the ability to launch custom, unsigned code, coupled with a small form factor is capable of anything. The terrorists and hackers of the next generation could be simply walking down the street and hacking away, using their concealed PSP to port scan and find a way to penetrate a victim's wireless network, and essentially, gather sensitive information.

How safe are we? Could the PSP pose as a tool for the next generation of hacking? Is this potential one of the things that Sony is trying to protect us from by pressing firmware updates, and, eliminating the ability to run homebrew? Is the PSP really a toy?

Well It seem like the world's gonna get rid of one 'dictator':

Quote
An Iraqi court sentenced a shaken but defiant Saddam Hussein to hang on Sunday for crimes against humanity, sparking joy for Shi'ites he oppressed and resentment among his fellow Sunnis across Iraq's violent sectarian divide.

As mortar rounds crashed on warring Baghdad neighbourhoods and police reported sporadic clashes despite a curfew on the capital, Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki called for unity after the ousted leader was handed "the punishment he deserves".

The United States, which set up the court after its invasion toppled Saddam in 2003, called it "a good day for the Iraqi people". U.S. officials again dismissed charges the verdict was timed to aid President George W. Bush's Republicans at elections on Tuesday that have been dominated by dismay at Iraq's turmoil.

Defence lawyers, who said they saw little hope from an appeal in the coming months, dismissed it as "victor's justice".

Saddam, 69, initially refused to stand when brought in to hear the verdict from Kurdish chief judge Raouf Abdul Rahman, at a quickfire, 45-minute hearing. When he did, shakily, with clear emotion, he yelled the defiant Arab battle cry "Allahu Akbar!" (God is Greatest) and "Long live Iraq" as the judgement was read.

CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY

"The court has decided to sentence Saddam Hussein al-Majid to be hanged until he is dead for crimes against humanity," Abdul Rahman said, ignoring Saddam's earlier bombastic plea that he should face a military firing squad, not the hangman's noose.

The judge, who earlier ejected former U.S. attorney general Ramsey Clark from the defence panel after he called the court a "mockery of justice", threw out a court guard for chewing gum and laughing as he stood by the fallen strongman in the dock.

Bearded and tieless in a black suit, and clutching a Koran, Saddam called for "forgiveness" for "aggressors" and "traitors".

A lengthy written verdict is expected later in the week.

The former leader has been sentenced to death before, in absentia for trying to assassinate Iraq's then leader in 1959.

He has been held by U.S. troops at Baghdad airport for three years and any execution, possibly next year, is likely to happen behind prison walls, like those of other criminals this year.

Before then, however, he will continue to stand trial for genocide against the Kurds. He is due back in court on Tuesday.

His half-brother, Barzan al-Tikriti, and former judge Awad al-Bander were also sentenced to death for killing, torturing and deporting hundreds of people from the Shi'ite town of Dujail after Shi'ite gunmen tried to kill Saddam there in 1982.

Former vice president Taha Yassin Ramadan received a life term. Three Baath party officials were jailed for 15 years and an eighth, minor defendant was acquitted for lack of evidence.

Saddam admitted ordering the execution of 148 men, calling it justified in wartime against allies of Shi'ite Iran.

International human rights groups, which had called for the case to be heard abroad, said the killing of three defence lawyers, the resignation of a judge over political interference and flaws in evidence meant that it fell short of a fair trial.

But U.S. and Iraqi officials hailed the year-long process as proof of the independence of Iraq's judiciary and a new landmark in the development of international war crimes law since Nazi leaders were tried, and some hanged, at Nuremberg 60 years ago.

The European Union and the Vatican, firmly opposed to capital punishment, urged Iraq not to hang Saddam.

DANCING FOR JOY

In Shi'ite towns and in parts of Baghdad, people poured into the streets after the televised hearing, dancing and yelling for joy at the fate of the man who oppressed them for three decades.

"The court has delivered justice for my son, who was killed by Saddam," housewife Um Hussain said in the Shi'ite holy city of Najaf as crowds chanted "Death to Saddam! Die you Baathists!"

In Saddam's Sunni home town of Tikrit, dozens of men and boys waved his portrait and chanted the old Baath party slogan "Saddam, Saddam! I give my life and blood for you, Saddam!"

But hundreds of killings a week have left many distracted and indifferent to the leader who long boasted he kept sectarian passions in check -- celebratory gunfire in Baghdad was minimal compared to that heard when Saddam's sons were killed in 2003.

In the northern city of Mosul, where Arabs and Kurds are vying for control, 30-year-old Bahjat, who declined to give his full name out of fear, said: "They have condemned Saddam for the killings that happened when he was president. But who will judge the leaders for the killings that happen every day now?"

The U.S. ambassador, Zalmay Khalilzad, said "closing the book on Saddam and his regime" was a chance for Iraqis to unite.

Somehow i do not think this will do much for Iraq... and I also feel it will be a jusitificaton for certain governments to move in on so-called "threats" like Cuba, N Korea, Iran and Venezuela...

and the Iraq war isn't gonna stop anytime soon.

Dell and AMD celebrate their love in front of thousands
Choice means buying AMD, not relying on Intel
Michael Dell and new best buddy, AMD's Hector Ruiz, cozied up on stage today at Oracle OpenWorld to celebrate customer choice.

While they didn't mention Intel by name, AMD's arch-rival was the butt of some badly-scripted managerial improv intended to highlight the wisdom of hardware vendors in picking AMD too. Michael Dell is expected to elaborate on Dell's new union with AMD - which includes fresh server and PC products - Monday afternoon during his own OpenWorld keynote.

Faced with stuttering sales and falling profits, Dell in May became the last big-name OEM to work with AMD, ending an exclusive relationship with Intel.

Admittedly, Dell's first embrace with AMD was less than wholehearted, with the company restricting itself to building quad-socket Opteron servers. Since then, Dell has bought on more AMD-based server and PC products, on its own account, and through its Alienware subsidiary. But questions remain over how deep its love runs for AMD.

Hence, AMD CEO and chairman Ruiz welcomed Dell on stage Monday morning with a fine line in understatement: "I'm sure you've been getting as many questions as I have about AMD and Dell joining forces."

According to Dell and Ruiz, the future of the companies' relationship is virtualization. "Virtualization is going to be increasingly important as AMD puts more processing power into a CPU... allowing customers to protect applications and multiple operating systems from each other," Dell said

"AMD and Dell both understand the needs of the enterprise. The ability to operate in this new virtualized environment. Dell using AMD virtualization technology is going to assist enterprises to streamline the datacenter and achieve greater efficiencies," Ruiz added.

And that was it. After a faux TV-teaser for this afternoon's news, Michael left the stage to the University of Texas's anthem, The eyes of Texas. ®

"It's so good....loving somebody, and somebody loves you back..."

Penis transplant reported in China

By MARILYNN MARCHIONE
AP MEDICAL WRITER

Chinese doctors say they successfully transplanted a penis on a man who lost his own in an accident, but had to remove it two weeks later because of psychological problems experienced by the man and his wife.

The case appears to be the first such transplant reported in a medical journal - European Urology, published by the European Association of Urology.

The Chinese doctors could not be reached for comment, and their report does not explain how the 44-year-old man lost his penis. It says only that "an unfortunate traumatic accident" left him with a small stump, unable to urinate or have sex normally.

Surgeons led by Dr. Hu Weilie at Guangzhou General Hospital performed the transplant in September 2005, a hospital spokesperson said Tuesday. The penis came from a 22-year-old brain-dead man whose parents agreed to donate his organ.

"There was a strong demand from both the patient and his wife" for a transplant, and the operation "was discussed again and again" and approved by the hospital's ethics committee, Hu writes in the journal.

Despite how shocking and radical the operation sounds, it involves standard microsurgery techniques to reconnect blood vessels and nerves.

From a medical point of view, "the main hurdle is the functional recovery," said Dr. W.P. Andrew Lee, chief of plastic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

From arm and leg reattachments, it's known that nerve regrowth occurs at a rate of about an inch a month and often is insufficient to allow normal use, he said.

However, the ethical and psychological challenges in such cases can be even more paramount, as this and other recent transplants involving hands and faces illustrate.

"Some of the considerations for a penile transplant are the same as for a hand or face transplant," such as the need to take lifelong immune-suppressing drugs to prevent rejection of the new organ, Lee said.

The drugs can cause kidney and other damage, acceptable risks when the transplant involves a vital organ such as a liver or heart, but more ethically perilous when the operation is aimed at improving quality of life rather than extending it, Dr. Yoram Vardi, a neurology and urology specialist at the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, Israel, writes in an accompanying commentary in the urology journal.

Psychological issues are keenly important. The world's first hand transplant recipient stopped taking immune suppression drugs and later requested that the hand be amputated.

Lee recalled speaking with the recipient of the world's first double-hand transplant in France, who told him it took months for him to accept his new hands and stop referring to one as "it."

Fourteen days after the penis transplant, the recipient and his wife requested that the organ be removed "because of the wife's psychological rejection as well as the swollen shape of the transplanted penis," the surgeons report in the journal.

Lab examination showed no sign of rejection, the doctors report.

If adequate attention had been paid to the need for counseling and other psychological concerns surrounding the transplant, "the need for penile amputation could probably have been avoided," Vardi wrote in his commentary.

Gives a wonderful explanation of attraction between the sexes. A True theory if you ask me.

Take note of the glossary of definitions used in the artice: http://www.laddertheory.com/gloss.htm

The article gets a green NSFW because it uses the 'f' word too often for even my liking.

Comments and theories welcome. Try not to turn the thing into anything too 'sexist' or women-bashing (though we guys all know the opposite occurs freely) anything the mods go jump on, avoid that too.

Ole Talk / We call him "Diddy" in the USA. What'll we call him in the UK?

The things copyright infringement can do across borders...

LONDON - Sean Combs is Diddy no more — at least in Britain.

The musician and entertainment mogul has agreed to drop the Diddy name as part of an out-of court legal settlement with London-based music producer Richard “Diddy” Dearlove, the law firm representing Dearlove said Monday.

Solicitors Jens Hills & Co. said Combs had agreed to “rebrand his commercial activities” in Britain and would “no longer be able to trade in the U.K. as ‘Diddy.”’
Story continues below ↓

Combs — formerly known as Puffy and Puff Daddy — has used the moniker P. Diddy since 2001, but last year decided to be known solely as Diddy.

Dearlove launched a lawsuit for unfair competition, claiming the name change had caused confusion. The case had been due to go to the High Court next month.

“I started getting e-mails from Puerto Rican girls asking if they could be in my video and people were asking me to look at their clothing line,” Dearlove was quoted as saying by The Guardian newspaper.

Combs, 36, whose fortune was last year estimated by Forbes magazine at $250 million, agreed to pay Dearlove’s costs, as well as “significant” damages, Dearlove’s lawyer said.

But a spokesman for the music mogul said the matter had been resolved “amicably.”

“The damages reported are wholly inaccurate and the request by Dearlove’s attorney for legal fees in a case that has been settled is regrettable and is being vigorously contested,” spokesman Robert Zimmerman of Dan Klores Communications said on behalf of Combs.

Dearlove, 40, best known for his 1990s dance remix of Blondie’s “Atomic,” told The Guardian he was “happy and relieved.”

“It doesn’t matter how big people become,” he said. “This is my name. I’ve been successful too. I’m not a global megastar, but what I do is valid.”

Ole Talk / West Indies MC!!!!

They done it yet again...grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory...

Quote
Chasing 279 for victory and well placed at 172 for 2 the West Indies lost 9 wickets for 29 runs in going down by 78 runs to Australia in the opening game of the Tri-Nation Series at the Kinrara Oval in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Openers Chris Gayle (58) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (92) shared an opening stand of 136 but the West Indies, who needed 108 runs in 26.4 overs with 9 wickets in hand, were dismissed for 201.

Ramnaresh Sarwan (22) was the only other batsman to reach double figures against man of the match Shane Watson 4-41, Nathan Bracken 2-45 and Mitchell Johnson 2-65.

Earlier Michael Clarke, 81 off 79 balls and captain Ricky Ponting, 56 from 54 balls, carried Australia to 279/9 against Jerome Taylor 3-56, Dwayne Smith 2-41 and Ian Bradshaw 2-36.

Captain Brian Lara says his team has to try to avoid a repeat of this performance.

Ricky Ponting praised his bowlers for fighting back.

Additionally, Skipper Ricky Ponting has been fined his match fee for showing dissent at an umpire's decision during Australia's victory over the West Indies.

Ponting was charged by the umpires with breaching cricket's code of conduct relating to dissent at an umpire's decision by action or verbal abuse.

The Aussie skipper pleaded guilty at a hearing led by match referee Chris Broad.

West Indies will next face India on Thursday.

Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / Video Editing PC
« on: September 03, 2006, 05:33:01 PM »
I was recently approached by a pardner of mine whose arse I saved by helping him get some video editing project from his PC to his mac (t'was as simple as sticking a spare dvd burner I had lying around in his pc...)

He decides he wants me to build him a video editing computer...

Now I've done some research at a site named http://www.videoguys.com

Based on the site's recommendations I have chosen this as my proposed specs:

CASE:  Thermaltake Tsunami
PROCESSOR: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+, socket 939
POWER SUPPLY UNIT: Thermaltake PurePower 500W, Modular
RAM: Kingston or Crucial 2GB DDR (2 x 1GB), matched pair, dual channel (value RAM)
VIDEO CARD: Matrox Millenium P650 PCI-E 128MB
HARD DRIVE 1 (OS): Western Digital 74GB 10,000 RPM SATA Raptor
HARD DRIVES 2 & 3: reuse customer's SATA drives in RAID-0 for loading video files
HARD DRIVE 4 : SATA 300GB for backups
FLOPPY DRIVE: standard 3.5" floppy
OPTICAL DRIVE 1: Pioneer 16X DVD-RW
OPTICAL DRIVE 2: DVD Burner with LightScribe feature
SOUND CARD: Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 4 (basic)
LAN: onboard
SPEAKERS: customer supplied
KEYBOARD Standard Keyboard
MOUSE: Apple Mighty Mouse or a Laser Mouse
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2 OEM
POWER PROTECTION: APC 750VA UPS

Estimated final cost (without labour): TT$15,000

I'd like some feedback on this:

What you'd use instead and why with respect to video editing (conroe fanboys welcome as well!), share your preferred specs, anything I can do better and even where to source these parts. If you have had any experience in building video editing PCs, definitely share your tips....

Nforce 4 was the chosen chipset for maturity... I thought about conroe but in my opinion (bar arguments to the contrary) I not sure about the stability of the chipsets for conroe, and I just not taking any chances with stability for this guy... he intends to spend... and I will make him spend.

As for the monitor, he currently has a dell 19 inch LCD... but i'd suggest to him about getting dual LCD displays to improve his workrate, and the my research on the matrox video card has "true" dual display support for his needs.

THe kinda bs I've had this week I really feel to cuss yes:

1. Fallin out with a client over a computer (y'all hear that one already)
2. Having another client make yuh miss most of the Independence fireworks because he decide to call me a 7.30PM to demand i fix his DSL connection.... that just pissed me off
3. Having all yuh plans for Independence night buss. Ladies you were going to 'trouble' end up making thier own plans.. without you.
4. The rental car you had for the 'plans' Independence night STALL in barataria when you decide to go home in dejection. It's 11pm mind you.
5. Finally deciding to wash your goalie gear from last Sunday's game, you go to the wash/laundry room only to realise that your bag of wet gear is nowhere to be found: Gloves, jersey, pants, socks and shin guard. When you investigate, you realise that somebody "accidentally" DISPOSED of al your goalkeeping gear in the garbage! This when you have a game tomorow!!

I now hadda friggin spend up to $700 early saturday morn to replace everything.... I had the shin guards since 1998, dammit! Jersey i get only months ago, and it was my favorite, too! so much for buying shoes to replace my now water-prone ones!!!

I need a bush bath, yes!!

LATEST EDIT:
on top of all that: Did I mention that diaorrhea wake me up at 6am and now threatening my footballing trip? I gonna take the chance to run to town and back without an 'accident'... sigh... (shudders at thought of no bathroom for 2 hours on the way to deep south (and non-functioning ones at teh destination), possibly having to do #2 on the side of the highway (while team laughs at me!)... the embarrasment!! ugh!!)
