Cops beat TSTT worker
By Akile Simon

Story Created: Jul 27, 2010 at 12:50 AM ECT

Story Updated: Jul 27, 2010 at 2:40 AM ECT

SCORES of angry pedestrians converged on police officers on lower Charlotte Street in Port of Spain yesterday, after the officers beat a man who had reportedly earlier sought assistance for a woman who collapsed along the roadway.

The pedestrians surrounded a police vehicle and demanded that Wayne Roberts be released, saying two officers assigned to the Traffic Branch began beating the victim with their batons shortly before 6 p.m. in the yard of Club Nickels, located near Express House on Independence Square.

Roberts, a supervisor II with the Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT), was up to late last evening being treated at the Port of Spain General Hospital for injuries he sustained about the body during the fracas.

The incident was recorded by several persons on their cell phones and later posted on the popular YouTube and Facebook websites.

A man who only identified himself as H Bernard, and said he was a co-worker of Roberts, told the Express Roberts had stopped to render assistance to the woman, who had collapsed and needed help. He said after Roberts told two policewomen, who were at the time giving a PH taxi driver a ticket, that a woman was in dire need of help, the officers jumped into a waiting vehicle and were about to leave. Incensed by the officers' inaction, Bernard said Roberts walked up to the police vehicle and asked the officers if that was the manner in which they were supposed to protect and serve. He then walked away.

"As he walked back in here (the yard of Club Nickels) to see the woman, two male officers run out of the vehicle and snatch him and start to beat him about the body. They forget it had an injured woman and continue beating him and throw him inside a police vehicle and beat him again," Bernard said.

"That whole thing was uncalled for. I can't imagine the man stop to help the woman and ask them for help and that's the treatment he get," a woman shouted.

"I'm sure they going and say he (Roberts) 'cuss' them (police) and 'cook up' some foolish charges. But the truth is, he did not 'cuss' or assault them. He tell them 'So all yuh does move, like imps? And all yuh say all yuh is to protect and serve and all yuh ain't even taking me on when I say de woman want help'," another eyewitness said of the incident.

The lawmen, outnumbered by the angry crowd who blocked the pathway of their vehicle, eventually had to call for back-up. After the commotion died down, angry passers-by literally grabbed the arms of officers assigned to the Repeat Offenders Task Force (ROPTF) and the Inter Agency Task Force (IATF), and took the officers into the yard of the club where the woman, who was only identified as Terryann, was seen lying on a concrete bench. She was placed in a police vehicle and taken to hospital.

Up to last evening, the Express was unable to get a comment from officers involved in the incident, as they were said to be still at the hospital with the victim.

"Protect and Serve with Pride", eh?   :shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead: :shakehead:

I go mind me own business when I see things happen, oui, if licks is the result of asking the police to get help if they happen to be present at an incident. *STEUPS*

Laptops / Buying an ultraportable laptop
« on: May 07, 2010, 08:41:57 AM »
After more than a year of enjoying my Asus EEE PC 1000HA laptop, I've decided that it is indeed time for a laptop upgrade.

What I will miss about my laptop the most is the white keyboard and the matte screen, as none of the potential relacements have this. I am not fond of glossy screens, but I guess I will have to deal with it.

My choices are based on the following requirements:

Screen should not exceed 12.1"
Weight must not exceed 4lbs (preferably closer to 3lbs)
Must have bluetooth (or at least support an internal bluetooth upgrade)
Must at least 2GB RAM
Hard Drive - 160Gb or higher
CPU must  Intel ULV SUxxxx or AMD Neo (X2) for ultrathin laptops
Battery must be at least 6 cell and should exceed 4 hours with routine use
Price must not exceed US$600
OS: Windows XP or Windows 7 Home Premium (Basic and Starter is crap!)

There are my finalists:

1. Acer Timeline AS1810TZ-4008 (Olympic Edition)
US$580 on Amazon

This is the 11.6" notebook I been eyeing the most and longest of the four contenders. I like this over the other acer timeline series as it is silver with the olympic logo. I doubt it willbe available for too much longer as the Winter Olympics has long passed. I'm considering this becasue it has a dual core CPU, bluetooth, and up to 8 hours battery life.

2. ASUS UL20A-A1
US$565 on Amazon

This 12" is what i liked best of Asus' offerings. it has a lovely aluminum finish and just has that sexy look that none of the other has. Bluetooth is optional, so I have to be careful to make sure it does have it before buying. User reviews say the 7.5 hour battery life is more like 4 though. Also not fond of the rocker touchpad buttons.

3. Acer AS1410 series
US$400 - US$480 on Amazon
This 11.6" laptop is the Well, best value for performance netbooks Acer been pushing for a while now. Available with various colours, CPU and hard drive sizes,  the best specs top out at US$480 for a Core 2 Solo SU3500 CPU, 320GB HDD and 6 hours battery life in a red colour. While none of them has built-in bluetooth, I have seen forums showing you how, and it enourages me enough to want to pull out the bluetooth module I installed in my EEE PC  and install it in this.

4. MSI Wind 12 U2xx
US$479 on Amazon (U230)

This is a last minute 12" contender i found just before I created this thread. Threre is an AMD CPU version (Wind12 U210 and Wind12 U230) with Neo x2 CPU and HD 3200 graphics and the Intel CPU version (Wind12 U200) with Core 2 Duo CPU and a WHITE keyboard.
None of these appear to have been released yet.

5. Toshiba Satellite T115D-S1125
US$470 on Amazon

I'm just throwing this 11.6" one in as lagnappe. Brown laptops are just not my thing, but toshiba supposed to be reputed for building sturdy laptops.

OK, so I think I have given you hopefully enough data to help me choose. choose your candidate carefully!

Lady Thelma Hochoy, the wife of the late Governor-General Sir Solomon Hochoy died at the age of 99 yesterday. An official of the Lady Hochoy Home, Cocorite, which is dedicated to assisting special children, said she would have been 100 in September. She had a touch of Alzheimers. She was born in St Madeleine.

Hochoy was the last governor of T&T and the Solomon Hochoy Highway was named in his honour. Thelma Hochoy was widely regarded as a humanitarian who reached out to the differently-abled children and youth. Lady Hochoy established the Lady Hochoy Home to help disabled children. She also opened a home in the heights of Guanapo in the late 1970s. She assisted with the rebuilding a new RC Church in Las Cuevas and another in La Fillette. She will be regarded as a great patriot.

Diego Martin resident Clayton Morle, 83, who knew the Hochoys said: “Thelma was quite a nice lady. I think she was a little Chinese girl from somewhere in Blanchisseuse. “I knew her when she lived at the quarters around Dundonald Street. Solomon was then Colonial Secretary. He was a civil servant who used to work in labour. I knew them when I went to audit the books. ML

Peripherals / Internal USB Expansion - we need this!
« on: April 07, 2010, 08:10:40 AM »
I was casually browsing Amazon and they recommended this thing to me. At first I was like "What madness is this?" but then I rejoiced:

NZXT IU01 Internal USB Expansion (Black)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0031ESKJA/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

This lil baby adds extra internal USB headers and ports, such that you can plug stuff like your usb bluetooth module permanently inside the case. A better description comes from Amazon customer reviews:

Quote
The NZXT IU01 is the perfect solution for the longstanding problem of not having enough USB HEADERS on your motherboard.

There seems to be some confusion so I will explain. This device adds three USB headers to your motherboard. A USB header is normally located on your motherboard and serves to connect two USB PORTS. What ends up happening many times is that a computer will have four external USB ports on the front of their case and only two USB motherboard headers. Both headers will be taken up on the motherboard (2 USB ports per header), thus preventing anything else from being connected such as a fan controller or an internal media card reader. This bad boy, the NZXT IUO1, comes to the rescue and pops out three more headers inside of your computer case. Note that this card also comes with two USB ports on it to connect a standard USB device such as a flash dongle, wireless dongle, bluetooth dongle, or a myriad of other dongles. These extra two ports on the NZXT IU01 are presumably to be used for something that you want to leave permanently inside of your case, or at least for an extended period of time. Once you close the case up you will not have easy access to any of these ports until you reopen the case.

And at just US$20, it is worth it!!

*adds to cart brisk brisk...*

Korean couple let baby starve to death while caring for virtual child
The couple had become obsessed with the online game Prius

Kim Yoo-chul, 41, and his partner Choi Mi-sun, 25, fed their three-month-old baby only on visits home between 12-hour sessions at a neighbourhood internet cafe, where they were raising an avatar daughter in a Second-Life-style game called Prius online, police said.

Leaving their real daughter at their home in a suburb of Seoul to fend for herself, the pair, who were unemployed, spent hours role-playing in the virtual reality game, which allows users to choose a career and friends, granting them offspring as a reward for passing a certain level.

The pair became obsessed with nurturing their virtual daughter, called Anima, but neglected their real daughter, who was not named.

Eventually, the couple returned home after one 12-hour session in September to find the child dead and called police. The pair were arrested on Friday after an autopsy showed that the baby died from prolonged malnutrition.

"The couple seemed to have lost their will to live a normal life, because they didn't have jobs and gave birth to a premature baby," Chung Jin-won, a police officer in Suwon, the Seoul suburb, told the Yonhap news agency.

"They indulged themselves in the online game of raising a virtual character so as to escape from reality, which led to the death of their real baby.

Hardware, Tweaking & Networking / IPv4 Address almost gone
« on: January 26, 2010, 08:36:48 AM »
Came across an interesting article on TechRepublic:

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/networking/?p=2491&tag=nl.e102

At this time, there are about 402 million address left, but...

Quote
The IPv4 addressing scheme consists of a 32-bit address space. According to RIPE that means IPv4 address space is 32-bits (232) in size and contains 4,294,967,296 addresses. At the time of this article, my iPhone app showed that 402,291,729 addresses (9.4 percent) remained. According to the app’s count-down meter, all the addresses will be gone in 593 days.

I guess we'll have to learn IPv6... yuck!

Storage / RAID-0: Revisited ... and it's good!
« on: January 19, 2010, 09:19:47 AM »
Well gentlemen and gals, it has been quite some time since I last tinkered with RAID-0

http://www.carigamers.com/cms/forums/index.php/topic,12539.0.html

And after much deliberation. I decided to jump in again.

My revived desktop gaming rig has 3 drives: a 250GB OS drive and two 500GB for data, all different brands and cache sizes. Then i have a 1.5TB E-SATA external as a backup of the other three.

After making the necessary backups, I decided to try out RAID on the two 500GB, with 16MB and 32MB cache resp.

WARNING and DISCLAIMER: RAID-0 has NO redundancy!!! If one drive fails, you lose everything on all drives! Saxman assumes no liability for any loss of data as a result of you trying what I have tried, espically if you did not have a dedicated backup drive like I have.

The result was a top read speed of just 93MB/s, which was less than that of my 1.5TB drive at over 120MB/s!!

So I decided to take a chance to see if i can increase speed further  and headed off to Circuit Zone to buy THREE WD Caviar Blue 500GB drives with 16MB cache at a cost of less than $500 each

When I got home I pulled out the other 3 drives (which may go up for sale soon) and stuck the new ones in.

It took a lil while to figure out how to enable RAID in my Gigabye P45 board, but once that was done, the 3- drive array was created quickly.

Next step: Installing Windows 7 32-bit

*an important side note: I did run into some trouble with the install where it refused to create the necssary partitions to start the actuall install. It was fixed by smply setting the RAID-0 as first in the boot order. This appears to be a common Windows 7 install issue.*

As for the install itself? not even 15 minutes. the vast majority (before final reboot) was completed in 10.

As for data transfer rates? I installed HD Tune 2.55 and ...

Max Read speed: 220+ MB/s
Min Read speed: 150MB/s
Avg Read speed: 190MB/s

*hands readers bounty paper towels in case of 'spills, nerd-gasms, jizzes', etc...*

Windows 7 appears to fly up, not start up... the welcome screen literally flashes before you get your desktop. Software installation, especally off the hard drive? ohhh, my goodness!

In later posts I will put up a series of official/actual benchmarks and screenshots

Man Tries To Rob Hair Salon & Becomes A Sex Slave

http://www.hubdub.com/m38755/Will_Hairdresser_who_turns_robber_into_sexslave_be_convicted_of_rape

Quote
Background: A hairdresser from the small Russian town of Meshchovsk has subdued a man who tried to rob her shop, and then raped him for three days in the utility room,

The incident occurred on Saturday, March 14. The working day was coming to an end at a small hairdressers, when a man armed with a gun rushed in and demanded the day’s earnings.

The frightened employees and customers agreed to fulfill his demand, but when the shop’s owner, 28-year-old Olga, was handing the money to the robber, she suddenly knocked him down on the floor and then tied him up with a hairdryer cord. The 32-year-old Viktor couldn’t have known that the woman was a yellow belt in karate.
Olga locked the unlucky robber in the utility room and told her colleagues that she was going to call the police - but didn’t do so. When everybody left home, she approached the man and ordered him to ‘take of his underpants’ threatening to hand him over to the police if he refuses to cooperate.
After that Olga raped her hostage for three long days. She chained Viktor to the radiator with pink furry handcuffs and fed him Viagra.

She eventually let the man go on Monday, March 16, saying: “Get out of my sight!”

Viktor went straight to hospital as his genitals were injured, and then to the police.

Olga was resentful when she was taken by the police.

“What a bastard,” the woman said about Viktor. “Yes, we had sex a couple of times. But I’ve bought him new jeans, gave him food and even gave him 1.000 roubles (around $ 30) when he left.”
After that she wrote a notice to the police claiming the man tried to rob her shop.
Both Olga and Viktor may now face prison terms. The woman could be convicted of rape, while the man of robbery.

My take: roobber  pwned by russian hair dresser!!

Sick Sad World / Man decapitates 5-year-old sister in front of officer
« on: March 31, 2009, 09:51:48 PM »
http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/03/31/sibling.stabbings/
Quote
(CNN) -- By the time the police officer kicked the door in, it was too late. Kerby Revelus was holding his 5-year-old sister, Bianca, and while the officer watched, he dragged a kitchen knife across her throat with such fury that he decapitated her.

Samantha Revelus, 17, had called 911 for help after her brother attacked his sisters with a knife.
1 of 3

"It's hard to imagine that kind of horror," said Milton, Massachusetts, Police Chief Richard G. Wells Jr.

Mere seconds passed before other officers arrived and rushed into the home in the tony Boston suburb of 25,000.

Police had received a 911 call from another Revelus sibling, 17-year-old Samantha. Suffering from several deep cuts in her upper body, she was losing strength.

"It was clear that she knew she was mortally wounded," Wells said.  Watch police chief discuss decapitation »

Samantha managed to explain that her 23-year-old brother had attacked his sisters with a knife, police said. When she was no longer able to keep talking, the injured teen handed her 9-year-old sister, Sarafina Revelus, the phone.

All the while, the kids' grandmother was doing laundry in the basement, apparently unaware of the savagery upstairs, police said. Mother Regina Revelus was at work, and father Vronze Revelus was not at home.

As officers surrounded the home and rushed into every room, Kerby ran into a bedroom where Samantha was on the floor, dead. Sarafina was on the floor near her sister's body, according to Wells.

Kerby Revelus then began attacking Sarafina with the knife, Wells said, prompting police open fire and kill him.

On Tuesday, the two slain siblings and their attacker were buried together. Sarafina Revelus returned home Tuesday after undergoing surgery Monday morning for wounds.

It was not the first time police have visited the home answering a domestic violence call, Wells said.

In September 2004, Kerby Revelus was arrested for punching one of his sisters in the face as they fought about money, the chief said. The Boston Herald identified the sibling as Jessica Revelus, who was not in the home during Saturday's attack.

Don't Miss
WCVB: Girl who survived knife attack returns home
Jessica Revelus told officers at the time that "she was not in fear of her brother," according to a police report from the incident, the Boston Herald reported. A charge of domestic assault and battery was dismissed because she refused to cooperate, Wells said.

Kerby was then in his last year at Milton High School.

But Kerby was in trouble a year later, in 2005, when he was charged with carrying a firearm without a license after he attempted to purchase alcohol at a Randolph, Massachusetts, liquor store. He was given a six-month sentence and was released in September 2008.

CNN reached Jessica Revelus by phone Tuesday. She seemed distraught and said she had not been able to sleep. Her brother's rampage came, she said, "out of the blue."

When asked whether he had a temper or had given any indication that he might want to hurt his sisters, she said, "I don't know. I am not good right now. I am not good."

On Monday, Jessica Revelus told the Boston Herald that "I was never afraid of him. I called the police because he thought he was so big and bad."

Jessica Revelus told the newspaper that her sister Samantha "would get into arguments" with Kerby over "little stuff" and that Kerby and her father were not speaking.

Police are unclear about what set the brother off Saturday, and Wells said he's being careful not to speculate.

Vronze and Regina Revelus said through a family spokesman that they had "no explanation" for their son's savagery, according to the Boston Herald.

"How much can you put on the shoulders of one family?" Wells asked.

Wells praised the first officer on the scene Saturday.

"I don't have words to articulate how this officer maintained his ability to do his job, " he said. "To go in and witness that first thing, just as he opens the door and stay on his radio through the whole thing ..."

He added that the horror of the day rippled through the force. "You can bet that our officers went home after this, and they hugged their wives and their children that much tighter. I hope that for this family and for my officers, that there can be a way to get through.

"We are going to try to make them whole as soon as possible, even though the events of this past weekend will stay with them forever."

A woman who bit off her boyfriend's tongue during a drunken birthday kiss has been told she faces jail.
Tracy Davies, 40, bit off a third of Mark Coghill's tongue after telling him "you never give me smoochy kisses any more".
Each had drunk a bottle of vodka before the attack at his flat in Jesmond, Newcastle, in October.
Davies was convicted of grievous bodily harm but cleared of the same charge with intent at Newcastle Crown Court.
The jury heard that the couple were celebrating Mr Coghill's birthday when Davies grew upset because she was not pregnant.
As Mr Coghill, 45, moved to comfort her, she asked him to kiss her, the court heard.

They kissed and she bit down hard on his tongue, causing him to scream, and he tapped her on the head, hoping she would let go.
He said: "Then when she did stop, she opened her mouth and looked at me in such a way that I have never seen anyone do before."
Mr Coghill said he could see part of his tongue inside her mouth.
He said: "She let out a satisfaction sound, like if you have a cup of tea when you haven't had one for a few days.
"A 'mmmm' sound."
She then spat it on the floor, he said.

Taste buds
Davies later called paramedics, who alerted police, and when arrested she told officers: "You're joking."
Mr Coghill was treated at Newcastle General Hospital, but surgeons decided the risk of infection was too high to consider reattaching the torn tongue.

The former customer service adviser was no longer fit to work, struggled to speak and had lost many of his taste buds, the court heard.
Judge John Evans adjourned the case for three weeks to allow for pre-sentence reports.
He granted Davies bail, but warned she would be jailed.
