Is anybody as worried as I am about the new combat feature with the soul gauge. Basically you have a bar that goes up to red if you block too much and when its full your opponent can break your guard and do a critical hit breaking your armour. This then leads to them being able to perform a finisher by pressing the 4 face buttons killing you instantly regardless of health.

So unnecessary in my opinion. What do you all think?

It'll just make the game a little more on the aggressive side, most of the time when they implement systems like this its for similar reasons.

It sounds like a page outta guilty gear's guard meter. Guard crush has been in almost every game recently although it varies from game to game. There's still stuff you can do to play defensive while not blocking, guard impact, evading etc. I'm sure it'll balance out somehow, they won't make it overly abusable and if it is, they'll balance it with patches like they've done with Tekken 6 many times since the arcade version dropped.

Hopefully the game won't suck like SCIII, heard trincity got the SCIII arcade edition which owns the console edition and has been rebalanced. Is this console only or will there be a arcade port as well ? I'd be interested in seeing some Japanese tournament videos if its at SBO any time. Plus Soul Calibur 1 is getting the XBL Arcade treatment, I should have a 360 soon, I'll definitely invest in that game, hands down my fave iteration of the series.

Well, here's a write up on that:

Critical Finisher

Soulcalibur IV will feature an all-new Critical Finisher system. This time there will be another gauge under the characters' Health Meter, known as the Soul Gauge. This meter will fill up when attacking and decrease when guarding. When the meter is empty, the opponent can do a strike that breaks off a part from the character's armor, altering their appearance and making them weaker for the remainder of the match. There are also three green boxes below the gauges, reflecting the state of the characters armor: high, mid, or low.

If the character manages to empty out the opponent's Soul Gauge again, they will get a short chance to perform a powerful Critical Finisher, which will kill the opponent instantly. Each character has their own personal Critical Finisher. Namco says that they developed the Soul Gauge to decrease the benefits from constant guarding, thus giving the game a faster tempo. It subsequently would make the matches more offensive, as well.

Soul Calibur vs. Star Wars. Crossover be crazy.

It strikes me as odd that Yoda and Vader won't be in the same game, though. If anything, those two would be perfect for one of those Destiny Matches.

that soul guard feature isnt new though

lol, thats from soul edge

was one of the most fun features of soul edge, if a guy guarded too much and you attacked constantly, you cold break their sword.

Which puts them at a disadvantage but for certain people it opened up a wealth of melee fighting.

Taki and that old nunchuck guy were teh best.
Mitsi was really good too.

THe soul guard also had a really cool otehr feature, you could press all the face buttons when your soul bar was full and you basically release all your soul energy into a really great damaging VISUALLY AMAZING combo, great finisher.

Was upset they took it out of soul calibur but it was great in soul edge.

it was a mean flam ting surely

using the soul edge combo was the ultimate way to win a fight, hard to pull off in pvp but really great feeling when you do.

ah the nunchuck guys name was li long that guys pops.

I used to love to lose my weapon with taki and li long
li long was a kick ass kungfu and boxer
and taki was in full out leaf taijutsu mode, was awesomes.

Maybe they can make the soul gauge an option that you can enable/disable for situations such as tournament play and online play.
