All Phenoms feature infamous L3 cache errata

However, good news inside

By Theo Valich: Friday, 30 November 2007, 8:09 AM

SADLY FOR AMD, the Phenom launch was dumbed down by a nasty bug that stopped AMD from launching a 2.4 GHz variant (9700).

At the same time, problems with the OS freezing were solved by a BIOS fix inside the motherboards that actually reduces performance between five to 10 per cent, since that BIOS update did nothing but ordered a processor to avoid that ill-fated corrupted cache data.

The problem with L3 cache caused performance reduction on all clock speeds and yes, Phenoms 2.2 and 2.3 GHz are affected as well, but it was really noticable at 2.4 GHz. BIOS run-around caused a 2.4 GHz part producing performance of 100-200 MHz slower parts. Of course, standard disclaimer in some rare-found, practically laboratory-only instances applies here.

We managed to learn that AMD was able to fix that problem through a micro-code update that is being prepared as we speak, and this micro-code update should be implemented in every Phenom from 9600 Black Edition and beyond. If that does not happen, micro-code should come no later than Phenom 9900 (2.6 GHz) in late January.

If you already own a Phenom, this micro-code update will be packaged with one of next versions of BIOS for your motherboard. This fix will enable normal performance at clocks starting from 2.4 GHz and beyond.

However, we would advise AMD work with partners on offering a Windows-based utility, since not all users know how to flash a BIOS (in fact, quite the opposite). Heck, you might even advertise it as a “free performance upgrade” utility. If that is a no go, it would only be fair if AMD issues a major service call, asking users to return their systems to channel partners and OEMs for a free BIOS update. µ

They need to stop imitating Intel of yesteryear and get their ears from the side of their ankles.. O_O

Things looking kinda grim on the upgrade front.

Phenom Fails Most AM2 Compatibility Tests.

Only Asus has stepped up to the plate with the proper BIOS update for ALL their AM2 motherboards.
I did a little research on their website and ALL BIOS updates as of 20th Nov 2007 include Phenom support.

So n00bs, what have we learned here today? : Understand that when an enthusiast recommends a certain brand of product over another, he aint just talking out his a$$.

It is a good thing when Phenom was first released that I immediately decided that at least cost wise, it was not worth it to upgrade from my 6000+

I'd STILL be swearing now if I had.

Let's see what happens next year.

I am thorougly shocked that MORE heads haven't rolled at DAAMIT yet,  :shakehead: I have potentially (I say potentially as it's not confirmed) more bad news for the industry as a WHOLE:

AMD bugged by bugs

B3 on the way to becoming B4

By Paul Taylor: Thursday, 10 January 2008, 5:29 PM

WRITING HOME from CES 2008, hardware site Erenumerique (Digital Age) reports that AMD has shot itself once more in the foot.

According to the French site, while chatting up a couple of AMD’s employees they got word that AMD has received the first Phenom B3 silicon and... wait for it... *surprise* It’s still buggy!

Apparently AMD will be doing a (quote) “new spin” on the silicon.

Now, whether that means a B4 stepping or simply correcting the snafu outright, your guess is as good as ours.

According to Guillaume, the silicon won’t be around until May ’08. There’s also some interesting info about AMD’s ATI plans.

On a different note, the same parties reported that the first 45nm process results were “encouraging”. Go figure.

If this self infliction of bodily harm indeed is true and continues the only real casualties will be US the consumer... I am beginning to look at K10 as almost as big a mistake as PrescHOTt. Problem being whereas intel had the dinero to recover and continue from Preschott, AMD has too many bet riding on a seemingly dead horse. We'll hope for the best is all I can say. i'd hate to return to paying 12K for a decent computer.... O_O *shudders at the thought*

You can only fight a PROPER fight for so long with depreciating stock prices and reduced profits. No profits==No money for R&D==No new competitve products==death to Brand==Death to customer friendly pricing... at least that's the way I see it.

Youre right. Luckily though, Intel isn't wayyyy ahead of them yet in terms of performance......YET. If they continue to...how they put it...shoot themselves in the foot, soon they will be so technologically far behind that they put themselves out of the race entirely. So in order to keep their stock prices from tumbling, I believe they need to get something on the road YESTERDAY and stop playing the rass with these buggy parts. If there is a fundamental design flaw residing within Phenom, scrap the damn thing and start over. If you dont ant to go that route, parallel develop. keep some of your forces on it but look towards developing something new.

For the time being I guess they have to rely on their die hard customers and keep fighting the price war until such time they recover from this seemingly endless stumble.

Well thing is, they still are very viable on the 2U and 4U systems and that's server space which is a much more lucrative market, but the image they're losing isn't helping their server side sales. And worse yet with Nehalem coming this year, if AMD doesn't pull another HAMMER out of their @$$ I have a suspicion Intel will BURY them in they're damaged limbs. Sad thing is ATI is doing well imho, sure Nvidia is still KOTH but considering that about 0.1% of ppl can afford a GTX or Ultra, I would have to say ATI is prolly doing quite well in the mainstream market space esp with lower prices and better availability. Thing is the Spider platform is decent save 1 part... the CPU. They have a power efficient chipset that would make intel drool, they have multi GPU support coming out their arse even on INTEL chipsets... I tell you it's like PrescHOTt. But Intel had money to have the Israeli team parallel development of their mobile platform which ultimately gave birth to CORE. AMD doesn't have that kinda dosh! have you seen AMD's share price lately? it looks like that of caribbean airlines... O_o

Lawd, that's not good news, but they dominated before so I'm sure they can do it again. Well they better because its as you said...back to $12k systems *shudders* ATI has indded shown some serious promise so much so that I seriously won't be surprised if ATI pwns Nvidia in the next gen video card wars or at least come clost to it.

damnit DAAMIT just get your processors in order and youll be ok.

ouch @ that carribean airlines quip :( that one hurt
lol not feeling sad for amd no no

but the most ultimate female specimen i know works there *sigh*
lol

anyways
let them die a natural death
its ok to let them goo, shhh no no reddy baby dont fight it, sleeeeep .. sleeeep thats right deep breaths deep breath daddy intel is going to make the pain go away now... yesss sleeeeeep ^_^

amd's financial problems are the fault of YUUUUUU silly fanboys that kept on backing this waste of time company for so long...  encouraging this practice of not paying the price for quality.

so now they stuck in the habit of cutting as many corners and doing what little they can to offer a cheaper altenative to intel. and now they pay the price, technical faults galore and the inability to create a product greater than the king of the hill that has always asked a FAIR price for the quality product they deliver, so that they can afford the R+D needed to develop even greater parts in the future.

So go on, blame yourselves and yur money grubbing ways for amds death ^_^

but its ok, Intel is a just ruler and wont punish the silly ones who backed amd in the past

Barcelona B3s are just fine

Rumours to the contrary are wrong

By Charlie Demerjian: Friday, 11 January 2008, 2:31 PM

THERE ARE A bunch of rumours floating about AMD's B3 stepping parts, saying they are have the same bug as the B2, IE the new step did not fix things. This is categorically not the case, it was, is, and never will be true.

When the rumours started to fly, I called AMD and talked to Pat Moorehead who answered all of my questions. The B3s are not bugged, period. The fix was tested on B2 silicon and verified (Don't ask, the elves who work at the Fraternal Order of Silicon Repair Mythical Creatures Local 17 get antsy if you reveal their secrets).

Basically there is no B4, there won't be a B4, and the next stepping is Cx. The Cx parts are the 45nm Shanghai cores, so the B3 will be the end of the line for 65nm. B3s are going to be sampling in the not so distant future, production in the end of Q1, and retail availability in Q2. That part is a slip.

In summary, B3 is fine. It is a little later than people expect, but what can you do? The fixed chips are on the way, sit tight, it is only a few weeks before this soap opera ends.

That is some very good news. Excellent.

And w1n some other new pertaining to AMD's share prices.

Quote
AMD SHARES were up seven per cent and Intel’s stock fell one per cent in the wake of the announcement that New York State is launching an investigation into Intel’s business practices.

The New York probe could help AMD’s cause in its own antitrust suit against its old rival and that sentiment was reflected in the shares movement.

However, AMD shares will have to travel a lot further north to satisfy shareholders after the comedy of errors that has afflicted the company recently. Its stock is trading at less than a third of the 52-week high. µ
