Defibrillators can be hacked

A CUNNING PLAN to monitor heart patents from their bedsides is vulnerable because the doctors did not think to encrypt the data.

More than 100,000 patents in the US have signed up for the scheme which uses implanted monitoring defibrillators to send data wirelessly to their doctor.

If they start to have an attack, the defibrillator gives a life jolting shock to pull them out of it. But apparently the system is so wide open that a hacker can read the data and tinker with the shocking mechanism.

At worst they could stop a shock being administered or create a shock when the person does not need one. According to AP a Food and Drug Administration spokeswoman has acknowledged a hacker could use specialised software and a small antenna to intercept transmissions from a defibrillator.

However she said that was unlikely and the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.

Of course if you are 23 year-old model waiting for your 84 year-old millionaire to die so you can collect on his estate, it might just be the sort of hack you might be interested in.
