What yall think of Ion on netbooks? It may give some good HD/3D on these machines with hdmi etc...

Lenovo Goes Ion With 12.1" IdeaPad S12 Netbook

http://hothardware.com/News/Lenovo-Goes-Ion-With-121-IdeaPad-S12-Netbook/

It's shaping up to be quite the month for Lenovo. Just weeks after it unveiled a refreshed version of its IdeaPad S10 netbook (understandably deemed the S10-2), the company is dropping yet another new rig on the world. Today, the IdeaPad S12 came to light, bringing with it the title of world's first netbook with NVIDIA's Ion technology. How significant will this be in the netbook world? If we had to guess today, we'd say "very."

HP unveils Mini 1101, Mini 110 XP / Mi editions with optional HD video accelerator

http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/26/hp-unveils-mini-1101-mini-110-xp-mi-editions-with-optional-hd/

HP's got more additions to its Mini netbook lineup coming your way with the 1101 and 110 XP / Mi. All three models sport a 10.1-inch widescreen LED, autosync software for easier connectivity to your primary PC, and the standard 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 / 1.66GHz N280 processor options with GMA 950 graphics, VGA output, 3 or 6 cell batteries, and 802.11b/g. The Mini 110 XP edition takes the trend even further with -- and we're sure you're surprised here -- 1GB RAM and 160GB HDD or 32GB SSD, as well as optional WWAN and a Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Video Accelerator, which HP claims will let you watch 1080p video smoothly -- yeah, we'll believe it when we see it. Those who go with the company's Linux-based pet Mi can bump up to 250GB HDD and 2GB memory. As for the Mini 1101, it looks like it's basically the business-centric 110 with XP and Vista as your OS choices and no apparent video enhancer. As for pricing and availability, the Mini 1101 is coming at ya on June 1st with a base price of $329, while Mini 110 will follow shortly after in black swirl on June 10th, and white swirl / pink chic on July 8th. Those will start at $279 with Mi and $329 if you want Windows XP instead.

lol, apple could hdmc. forget 'em all.

(well I actually like the nano, though been getting more use out of my sansa of late)

I am still in love with woodyear's find. Can't wait for 'em to go on sale @ US$449.99.

The Lenovo S12

Let the evangelism begin.

The graphics chip will be capable of 1080p video decoding as well as accelerated h.264 video playback as well as Blu-ray playback. The Ideapad S12 will feature a 12 inch display that has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels. Other hardware features include 1080p via an external screen using the HDMI port, 1GB of RAM, 160GB HDD, XP Home installed as standard (although MS will probably certify Windows Vista to be used), a 4 in 1 card reader and a 1.3 megapixel webcam can also be found in there.

3G will not be standard although an Express Card slot can be found in the side of the S12 netbook which allows a 3G card to be used. A total of 3 USB 2.0 ports can be found and a multitouch trackpad which is an excellent addition.

Actually it is interesting to note that Apple does not see the netbook segment as part of its sales strategy. Since they are associated with high priced premium machines a cheap netbook would not fix into their marketing mix. Also premium machines have higher margins thus they can sell fewer units even in recession, netbook manufacturers like Asus and MSI need volume sales to make profits on these machines and that is why they have priced them so low. Apple is not too concerned there since there are people who love the mac platform and will continue to buy it regardless of the alternatives....I always wondered why friends would buy a $1200+ Macbook when a similarly configured windows laptop would do the same for half the price. There is value in being exclusive I guess.

More importantly their numbers aint too bad either, even in rexession they are able to move inventory....

I ordered this from amazon yesterday. after reading many reviews all over the net i chose the msi wind u123 003us. i bought a new hp 15.6 '' screen laptop last mth so i'll see which one makes more sense to keep and i'll sell the other. to me the wind looks like the most balanced notebook plus it has a decent hardrive, 160gb, bluetooth and wireless up to n-class.

i'll give an update when i collect and play with it for awhile. lookin to put ubuntu and possibly mac os

Disney-Branded Netbook Designed for Kids

Asus/Disney Netpal

Buzz up!on Yahoo!

Call it "Baby's First Laptop."

On Wednesday, Asus and Disney launched the co-branded Netpal netbook, also known as the Asus MK90 and MK90H, designed for kids aged 6-12. The Netpal will be available in late July, and will retail for $349.99.

The systems come in Princess Pink and Magic Blue and offer customizable themes that kids can set to their favorite Disney films and characters, including Club Penguin, WALL-E, Hannah Montana, and the Jonas Bros.

Disney's branded netbooks are kid-proof and kid-friendly, and pack plenty of power to boot. The "Netpals" are rugged and durable with a spill-proof keyboard and ShockShield protection that should save data in a fall. More importantly, parents can be confident that their children will be safe, with more than 40 robust parental control options. These include email and browser filters, as well as parental control over email.

The netbooks also come with a sizable software bundle, including Disney-branded media-management software (Disney Mix), photo software (Disney Pix), games, widgets, and more, that all launch from what Disney calls the Disney Magic Desktop. Even the Disney Radio application seems to be a kid-friendly take on Pandora or Slacker, offering streaming audio and song requests. On launch, the browser opens to a number of Disney-branded Web sites.

The netbook runs on an Intel Atom N270 processor, with 1 Gbyte of DDR2 RAM. It includes an 8.9-inch LED-backlit screen with a 1,024-by-600 resolution. The ASUS MK90H offers a 160-GB spinning drive, while the MK90, exclusive to Toys 'R' Us, will have a 16-GB solid-state drive. Otherwise, the systems are identical.

Both feature a VGA port, 3 USB ports, an Ethernet jack, audio-out and Mic-in, a multi-card reader, and a 0.3-megapixel webcam. Both systems offer 802.11 b/g/n and ASUS promises 5 hours of battery life. The MK90H weighs in at just over 2.6 pounds and the lighter MK90 is only 2.2 pounds thanks to its SSD. Both run Windows XP Home.

now this has huge potential!

I've been recommending netbooks for people buying machines for kids (7 years, 9 years, etc...) instead of a full fledged laptop for them to wreck.

Quick confession, that I love all things disney. Definitely could see this taking the kid market by storm.

better yet if they do some transformers/gi joe themes. gg

Yes it was a good idea from a marketing point of view very little changes were needed so their margins are still kept intact...

Well, the MSI X340 is officially out, and available...

Not exactly a netbook.  More like an official honest-to-god notebook. Pretty fierce specs too.
I like it, but I wish it had an optical drive, or else I would be all over it. :)

I would go with the Lenovo S12, so much more in that package but the S10 is so cheap now. Hard to argue with the price.

Netbooks are really a hot ticket item

Sony claims lightest-ever notebook
« Reply #116 on: October 08, 2009, 11:24:24 AM »
http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/10/07/sony.launches.vaio.x.netbook/

Sony's unveilings tonight were highlighted by the VAIO X. The 11-inch netbook crossover is billed as the lightest ever notebook and uses a carbon fiber shell to reach a weight of just 1.6 pounds. As it's based on a smaller and cooler running Intel Atom chip, the system can also afford to be extremely thin and measures 0.55 inches thick across its whole length.

The Atom similarly contributes to battery life. Although the stock battery nets a strictly average 3.5 hours of use, a second, extended battery that comes with every system quadruples the longevity to 14 hours. A multi-touch is new to Sony and supports pinching, rotating and similar controls.

VAIO X systems launch at $1,300 and have a 2GHz Atom, 2GB of RAM, a 64GB solid-state drive and Windows 7. Every model has 3G through Verizon as well as data-independent GPS, but a special Signature Collection model at $1,500 both comes in all-gold and doubles the permanent storage to 128GB. Pre-orders begin this evening and will deliver systems next month.
