Well folks, times hard all over the world and it seems like it extends to our life as well.

DEST is closing up seemingly for good. So only cafes left in the west are in POS itself now.

Was great while it lasted, launched many a gamers career, shall be missed.

I'll always remember DEST as the place where I was first introduced to GATT.
Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later, but damn I'll miss the place.

End of an era and a sign of the times.

I remember when we first setup that spot as the original GATT HQ so many moons ago. Laid the foundation for all that GATT was to become. Being a family owned building, never expected it to close though. That is one GL that did not face the same level of financial strains of all the others.

The more things change, the more they remain the same.

Battlefield Desert Combat, Savage, Generals. Ravenshield. Some of the most intense sweat action used to go on yes.

Bakumatsu. Time for Edo to become Tokyo.

Yeah it takes alot more than just saying it and it happening. Especially with the advent of the TSTT/ Flow business. Everyone and their mom has internet at home, its difficult to convince anyone really to come out of their homes to pay for LAN based gaming they can do at home. In cafes now i'm sure there are alot of people still playing these little MMORPGs that in my opinion killed some of our best gamers.....

We need to find a way to integrate LAN gaming with the persons at home. Baego had an excellent idea a while back while i was at Greendot about creating a nation wide vpn and integrating it with the cafes. That would spark the competitive gaming and people with not so great pcs would need to go to the cafes to play the games.

I've been off of the LAN gaming scene for a while but as was said earlier there aren't any GLs in the north left other than POS... we need to revive the GL scene. I know people have issues with TSTT also but i'm sure someone somewhere knows someone who works in one of our excellent ISPs we have floating around the country.

Bsensei....even tho everybudy an dey mummy hav net and games at home to play ALOT of ppl still actually go out to cafes and play. Not everybudy these dayz hav uber PCs or NexGen consoles to play. There also is a added competitiveness when you "sweating" with someone in the same room.

All that is needed is an easily findable location as well as a decent looking spot and I believe you will be able to bring a decent enough crowd. But as I and you said its much hards than it sounds.

I am willing to assist in anyway in setting up a new GL to attempt to replace this one.

EDIT: I have a cousin workin Blink CS......although he probably isnt in a high enough position to do anything i ""might"" be able to get some info/contact.

Well i heard that was one of the difficulties at DEST bringing in enough income to support the place. Cafes breathe a culture and people form groups and cliques. If yuh padna not going cafe you not going cafe and so on. All it takes is one falling out with someone in the group and thats that.

Therefore cafe owners tend to befriend people so that they stay which causes people getting free time bla bla bla.....its difficult to maintain customers....people are unpredictable.

Good ideas, all.

I think, if anything, we need to hearken back to the good old days and try to organise an HQ to call our own. To my recollection, this is the 3rd place GATT has called 'official headquarters' (the other two being Marli Street and Maraval Road) to have gone down. True, the advent of cheaper, at-home internet access has crippled the Internet cafes somewhat, but, like EK said, not everybody has it. Plus, the whole 'human interaction' thing isn't there (unless you consider MSN Messenger to be the pinnacle of human socialisation.)

Know what I miss? People. Real, live people.
People to hang out with, people to talk s**t with, people to cuss left, right and center when yuh loss HARD. That is something you can only get at a sweat, and not over some landline running several feet overhead.

Meh, I'm rambling here.
Long story short, I'll miss GLs like DEST, because it served to do one important thing: bring people together and really give them a feel of a close-knit, gamer society.

would be great to have that kinda ferver again.. but alas... men playing wow.. more dots more dots.. ok no more dots... so no more clan warfare.. sigh

with online games on the wii,ds ps3.360 ppl just have no reason to leave home. Why leave home with a big tv and a soft couch and drinks to go out an hope you will be lucky to get a small tv or pc
