p5q-e silicon image sata controller question
« on: June 03, 2009, 11:20:38 AM »
Know a few of you guys owned this board (in fact, i think this is one ah allyuh same board)

is there anyway to enable the 2 sata ports (port 0 and port1) controlled by the Silicon Image SIL5723 Controller as a normal non raid controller? i am not seeing an option in bios (and after reading it appears there is none)

any help or even a point in the right direction will help, my storage mirror is on those and even if i wanted to move em i can't because i will run into this error again. i have 8 sata devices. 7 hdds and 1 dvdrw

I don't think I understand your question. Is it that the drives are not working on these ports, or you can't seem to get the raid to work?

my bad yo

the controller auto detects drives you plug into it.

just plug in and it goes raid 0 you have to use something called Drive Xpert (SI steelvine manager with ASUS GUI) to send to raid 1

i dont want it to be in either configuration, just want it to work as 2 sata ports.

the drives on these controllers come up in disk mgmt, but 1 is labeled missing (the one on the 2nd port more than likely) and the other is forever in need of reactivating (the one on the first port), as far as i can tell there are no drivers that i missed nothing shows up in DM as installed but without drivers.

and after reading up controller apparently doesn't need any for configuration.

i know its the controller catching a fit because the other controllers (marvell and intel) work without flaw and the drives work on them.

Found some info that might help here

Basically, the SiI5723 Controller is a Hardware based RAID controller, so it won't really need any drivers in order to work. However, you should install the Speeding HDD app (or Silicon DriveXpert whatever it's called) to manage your array.

From what you've said so far, if you want to setup a storage mirror (raid-1) connect the two drives to the SiI5723 Controller (if you have data already on one, then make sure that's drive #1, and the other one should be blank, drive #2)

You can't use the two ports independently of each other, it's either you go RAID-0 (striping) or RAID-1 (mirroring)

That was my board self, which I sold to Hard O/C.  I knew that those SATA ports couldn't be used independently,
so I never used them.  You should have asked me first man. :)

yeah was reading up on that just now. also the performance of that controller over the intel is that is ballz

i can use 1 of the ports as a normal sata but the other is shot.

fk that shit.

will buy another tera or 2 and retire the smaller drives.
thanks though net

i only hook up the drives this morning self and was like 'wtf?' i will disable that or sum -1 from asus for that, +1 for giga and there awesome capability of BEING ABLE TO USE ALL YOUR SATA PORTS >:(
