Asus P6X58D Premium - A Truely Next-Gen Motherboard

Eager to get in all the USB 3.0 hard drives, SSD drives and... other hard drives cropping up these days? Then you're in luck, as ASUS' brand new, USB 3.0-ready P6X58D Premium motherboard is now finally available to order. Of course, being an early adopter doesn't come cheap, and this particular motherboard will run you a hefty $309.99 from Newegg. That will get you a board that runs with the best of 'em, however, including support for a Core i7 processor, room for up to 24GB of RAM, three PCI-Express 2.0 slots, a pair of 6Gb/s SATA interfaces, four plain old USB 2.0 ports and, most importantly, two for USB 3.0. Setting up a rig? Feel free to let us know how it works out in comments.

Although there's no use for USB 3.0 & SATA 6Gb/s right now, it still may be an option for those looking for a future-proofed mobo.

Unfortunately there aren't any normal HDs that can take advantage of SATA3 as it's a mechanical limitation. Only SSD and maybe 15k RPM drives see ANY benefit from SATA3 and well there are no USB3 devices per say. So nice, but better to wait till these features are mainstream. By then the price would have dropped to.

It will take at least 18 months before this really catches on. By that time, new chipsets would come with support for it built in with the proper bandwidth requirements available on board instead of the current "slapped on" implementation.

Even then, how many devices REALLY gonna benefit from the enhanced speed? Hard drives/ssd's/flash and blu ray burners. What it WILL do is open up the possibilities and we'll see some clever innovations that will take advantage of the speed.

Last but not least, everything usb3.0 is gonna be pricey. I dont really see conventional hdd's getting much faster so it will be SSD's, which when they start to ship sata3 u KNOW they go be hella expensive.

All it takes is time.
