Solving a mobo power on/off cycle issue.
« on: August 14, 2011, 06:46:55 PM »
I present this case to you:

Deciding to take a stab back at MCSE, I decide to build a slim PC with a new MSI G41 motherboard, a  slim case donated by daniboy, a Pentium D 940 CPU i got from a customer, some RAM I have lying around unused and an unused hard drive.

so I assembled the build.

when I power on PC using a Crucial Ballistix 1066 DDR2 RAM, it undergoes a cycle where it turns on for 2 seconds, turns off, turn on for a split seconds and turns on again, and the cycle repeats.

Thinking it is the PSU I swap for a known working one. no dice. Tried a working Corsair and some value crucial. Same thing.

take out RAM. I get the beeping but it still power cycling on its own.

Only when I take out everything an power up the board by itself doe the issue stop.

I say "odd". I happen to have a Core 2 Duo E400 courtesy of Netizen, so I pop that in and try to boot.

same thing using the Crucial and Corsair 1066 RAM, but miraculously it works fine with the value DDR2-667 RAM. I was fully able to install server 2003, install all driver and updates without a hiccup.

But I still need to establish what is causing this issue so I tack back with the faster RAM. Back to the power on/off cycle.

Even updating the BIOS is of no use.

Gentlemen tell me your thoughts. This issue can be demonstrated for you in your prescence if you like.

God is dead.

Supports two unbuffered DIMM of 1.8 Volt DDR2 667/800 DRAM, 8GB Max

guessing thats your problem board doesn't support 1066

try running the faster ram at 667/800 see if that helps

Had a similar issue with a customer's MSI P6NGM where the board would boot and work fine with ONLY two sticks of 512mb memory and NOTHING else I had (out of a total of about 8 sticks). I even tried changing the cpu and had the same issue, even after bios updates.

Strange thing is, the stick of Corsair XMS I originally gave the customer worked without problems at time of build and still works fine in other systems, so to does all my other sticks but seems as though it forgot how to support memory?

Just ended up giving up and using another board. I say u probably have a similar situation, especially if that board isnt actually new.

Mobscene, you raise a point there I did not bother to check.

didn't realise it did not support 1066 RAM

Well I guess I can try a Kingston 2GB DDR2-800 stick I have and see if that work fine too.

...but then the BIOS upgrade should have solved any RAM compatibility issues.

It could be THAT particular 1066 module that it's not agreeing with.

updating the bios does not always mean an upgrage in ram support. A board can only support what it was built for.
