yea the problem lies where promises were made and people what promises kept...

thats what happens when people just blurt out things and make promises and comittments.. then when they have the power to do so... no action...

thats my take on the 5%... i know most of these people really dont deserve any raise to begin with but.. certain things were said to them..

I agree with phoenix there 100%. A lot of people don't even do anything close to the work to get the salaries they have now. But then again, i too young to be making such comments *goes back to cutting the grass around the house to earn keep*

But unfortunately the inflation rate in this country doesn't ever drop for some odd reason. Well not an odd reason of course but yea.

My observation is this, Trini's doh understand the term "CUT BACK". I have seen families as well as friends go through hard times because money tight but will still live the exact same way without making sacrifices. So meh..

You also gettin free health care and education and u want a raise? wtf.. ungrateful people yes..

Im reserving judgment until the end of this Ltd SOE but if u ask me it's the biggest operation this country has seen in a while since that ummm.... "Operation Anaconda" thing a while back......yea.

Also, wasn't it put into to effect to prevent things from escalating further after those 11 murders that took part within 48hrs?

First ppl complain they not doing enough and now when something big going down is like " WTF WHYYYYY?!?!?!?!".  I also agree with Wintry and Virtue's views as well most of those ppl do next to nothing to deserve a raise, I know some ppl like that personally.

aye the same PP said that crime was under control a couple weeks ago... so to go from that str8 into a SoE... be it limited or not.. says alot... you look @ what state of emergencies are called for and let me know if it makes sense... but i dont want to get into the the politics to much

and i think allyuh still missing the point with the people and they 5% you know... its not whether they deserve it or not... this is what was PROMISED to them by a party prior to the elections... so now the people want to collect on they promise after offering they votes...

I'll be honest with you I didn't listen to all the promises made so if >5% was put in writing somewhere, then that's something to consider, HOWEVER promises or NOT if reasonably you can't afford more than 5% then you can't do it.

If I tell my brother tomorrow I promise I will give you driving lessons in my car because it's manual and he going for a manual license, then a week from then I lose meh job and have to sell meh car, I can't keep my promise now can I?

Now this e.g. isn't to be taken as a 1 to 1 comparison to what's happened here mind you. But it's meant as a PRACTICAL example of how SITUATION affects your ability to make your PREVIOUSLY made commitments.

Now there is yet another example to give, I work in the service industry and by extension part of this industry requires SLA (service Levels agreements). Many in the service industry (particularly IT) may be familiar with the term. That's where you CONTRACTUALLY (for better or worse) sign into a WRITTEN contract with another party to GUARANTEE certain services, whereby should you be unable to provide said agreed service YOUR @$$ GET CHARGE $$$ in damages. Now to tie this to the topic, if I TELL you I gonna give you X but I eh SIGN a legally BINDING document to subjugate my @$$ to the aforementioned terms, in all earnest I am MORALLY obligated but NOT LEGALLY. If everyone out there STUPID enough to believe a politican promise without making them sign, HARD LUCK padna. It won't stand up in court and your wife go take d chirren.

lol wintry you going to far... note i never said that i agree with the unions.. i'm just showing you how it is...

when a party says.. put me in power and i will do a, b and c and then when they reach in power they doing x, y and z and saying they cant do a,b,c then there will be an issue...

all parties make promises the cannot keep.. but they come close to keeping some... in this case alot of exuberant promises were made so even coming close to keeping some is becoming a challenge

and yes alot of people out there are/were stupid enough to believe the crazy promises... but now that they already made their choice they have the right to fight for it...

again not agreeing with them... but i understand what going on

True, the mob IS stupid and particularly in T&T they like ANY excuse to get more even when they don't deserve it. I've been saying this every time I speak about this topic, what the government SHOULD do but is logistically and reasonably IMPRACTICAL, is have a PERFORMANCE REVIEW of ALL government workers, STARTING at the TOP to the very clerks at the bottom, security guards, sanitary workers etc. If you not performing you get a salary CUT, if you ARE you get upwards of 5%.

The problem with this (which coincidentally I undergo being in the PRIVATE SECTOR, annually) is Trinis CORRUPT. I could tell you some stories of BOBALL!!! that would make you sick dread. But I digress. I say institute performance review kick out the slackers, promote the hard working, SHAVE the management (cause I would ARGUE if they skim the top they can MORE than afford 5% at the bottom) and streamline each facility. AH well PIE in the sky ftw...1st world my @$$, we could have 1st world facilities and 10th world mentality and we'll go NOWHERE.

The sort of policies I would advocate would have the unions arming themselves and catapulting men over my wall to get me so all I'll say is that I'm totally against this socialist nonsense. Everytime I hear one of them refer to the other as "comrade" I want to slap them and remind them that that approach failed already.

Let every man stand for himself (with certain exceptions), none of this collective crap that works directly against a meritocracy. Unions could salt for all I care.

our esteemed AG talking one setta....the words escape me atm (Domincic Kalipersad looking ancient though)

also learning about Commissioner Gibbs being detained in Brazil for lack of passport, and also ducking out without telling anyone..Commissioner duck out during a State of Emergency..FTL

Also learning that this SOE could go on and off indefinitely for 6 months....d rassplat..

Sad thing is, as ive been hearing whole freaking day, a state of emergency is a last resort, if this doh work, it would effectively show the population that our government can not deal with the crime situation...

Sad thing is, as ive been hearing whole freaking day, a state of emergency is a last resort, if this doh work, it would effectively show the population that our government can not deal with the crime situation...

A SoE is a last resort, but not a last resort as a crime fighting measure.
The approach being used is oafish and overly high handed. If it's one thing history will show is that when Governments take on more power they're loathe to release it. If using SoEs to fight crime becomes standard imagine the future.
*10 man ded a weekend*
Kamla: "Lock it down!!"
*we figure rel weed landin Saturday*
Kamla: "Lock it down!"
*anti government elements planning a rally*
Kamla: "Lock it down!"

Am I the only one that realizes that this is NOT what a SoE was made for? No framer would have created the clause envisioning this. Suspending the rights of citizens is the most serious business around. It's serious business that should not even be contemplated unless our way of life is in jeopardy.
Is it? Not even close. We all take more precautions because of crime but people liming and relaxing normal for the most part. You want to see what it looks like when crime is threatening a way of life? Look at Mexico. We aren't even 10% of the way there.

There's crime everywhere. People die. It's unfortunate, and definitely action should be taken to fight this, but between crime and the SoE (which could last God knows how long), between crime and the GOVERNMENT, who exactly is threatening our way of life at the moment?

If the operation was well executed, concentrated in areas where the strength of our protective services would allow it to work properly, AND kept to the minimum duration I might say alright, let's accept this infringement. But running around like headless chickens and suffering the population with a measure that anyone with an IQ over 100 can see will not work is NOT the infringement on my or anyone else's rights.

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Trinidad reputation is being destroyed internationally, this stupid SOE is so retarded, d real criminals responsible sipping on they margaritas relaxing theyself. D store owners that leaving prices high when thing fall, them is d bigger criminal, d ppl in position of authority who have d power to affect change on a wide scale and abusing and missing it, them is d bigger criminal.
D ppl who charging the poor for what should be free, them is d criminal. D ppl who making lofty promises and employeed by d ppl to serve d ppl, but screwing d ppl over and dem business fix is d bigger criminals.

But society eyes will be on d thugs and hollegans on d street corner. Them is just pawns. They is juss the consequence of decisions made alot hire up, dont get me wrong, they have to get lockup too, but unless things change at d top. D country will get worse, and worse and worse.

Is not a bandit from brooklyn cause wallstreet to crash and cause d world recession. Is d ppl in power and with d money cuase it, and now d innocent have to suffer, and dem business fix.

PPL have to wakeup and call 'bullshit' when they see it.
D place to gone through for any government to just come and fix crime.
But when decisions are being made that immediately having a negative effect on d country, that is juss retarded. From day 1 to now, things juss get worse. And sad to say, it now start.

People car does be getting theif 2-3 blocks from d police station, and when you run in to report it, before d police jump in d car and gone get yuh vehicle, (they know exactly where d criminal taking it), instead dey juss take ah report and go back relaxing theyself.

The law does be on d streets giving man speeding ticket juss trying to get to work.  But d known criminals doing whatever d hell dey want. How could u advise somebody not to make a report cause dey go come for yuh?

Now with this SOE how much innocent ppl going to get search for no reason, if i was a criminal i go be dumb enough to be walking around in ah SOE with anything on me?
D only ppl going to feel d hurt from this is d innocent.

Is to get a piece of 2x4, let it dry for some days, and start sharing licks from d TOP come down.

People must change they mindset, before nations do.
And in closing, ill lash another map.

Arcman, honestly 9 times out of 10, any time govment say SOE in this country labour unions was making a fuss the week before and talks not going well.

exar kun say soe is not a good 'crime fightin' measure, and he right. the way them handling this not making no sense if yuo really trying to fight crime. u doh need no soe to fight crime. u doh need to lock up ppl in they house whole nite to fight crime. i cyah stand ian alleyne stupidness, but i could give d man props for showin dat u could get all d information u need to solve crimes in t&t if u really want to. and it have no soe involve in what he do.

but u know what a soe good for?

http://libcom.org/library/labour-rebellions-1930s-british-caribbean-region-colonies-richard-hart

Quote
The Labour Rebellion in Trinidad & Tobago
The report of the Wages Board, appointed by the Government of Trinidad & Tobago in 1935, was a great disappointment to the workers. The members of the Board had been required to draw up a Cost of Living Index and, possibly as a result of the report, no legal minimum wage had been established. As one observer commented, the Board "by using questionable indices for assessing the real needs ... , gave the impression that few workers were being paid substandard wages". [24] Cipriani had signed the report and this, together with other signs of his growing conservatism, had by 1936 caused most workers to lose confidence in him and the Trinidad Labour Party.[25]

In September 1936 Uriah Butler, a former oilfield worker turned preacher who was very popular with his fellow immigrants from Grenada, and who had formerly been a supporter of the TWA, severed his relations with Cipriani and launched his own organisation. On 19 June, 1937, after the company had failed to answer his demands for wage increases, Butler called a strike of oil workers at the Forest Reserve premises of Trinidad Leaseholds Limited. A warrant was issued for Butler's arrest but an attempt to arrest him while he was addressing a public meeting was frustrated by the crowd. An unpopular police corporal, part of the party attempting the arrest, was beaten, soaked with paraffin and burned to death. Another policeman was also killed. Butler went into hiding.[26]

Within two days of this event a strike had engulfed the oilfields. Strikes in other industries and occupations soon followed and before long the entire economy had been paralysed by a general strike. According to an editorial in the Port Of Spain Gazette, it was a situation "which assumed a proportion previously unknown in the history of labour agitation" in the colony. A state of emergency was declared and two British warships were rushed to the island, arriving on 22 and 23 June. Marines and sailors were landed and thirteen police officers were brought in from England and two from Ireland. In addition to the constabulary the local military forces - the Trinidad Infantry Volunteers and the Trinidad Light Horse - were mobilised. Numerous arrests and imprisonments followed, but Butler was not arrested until September. He was subsequently tried and sentenced to two years imprisonment for sedition.[27]

ever since, the govmnt has always used soe as trump card. eric make SURE that it was in the constitution to use against unions. temporary setback is nice way to say it. they temporarily going to get set back to 2009 levels and have to start negotiation all over wit no public sympathy. nobody not going to be interested in strike becus they have 2 week of lime to catch up on.

it only have 2 thing that trinis does hold on to for more dan 2 weeks at a time if they cyah see it. tabanca and carnival. and even tabanca does get bowl out when u see is carnival time. striking ent no carnival.

murders down 50-60 since last year dis time. even 1 is too much, but soe and curfew not going to solve crime by itself, just defer.

wintry, i find is a pack of tata. like u i know it have too much wuttles ppl taking pay they never earn. but dat is what happen when you make out a cheque and cyah pay later. dey shoulda never promise nothing, ppl woulda still vote for dem because manning was just not an option anymore. some ppl deserve and need dat money. Many don't. but not all of them wuttles ppl in the unions. check them members of the house of representatives and senate u go find plenty.

but wathc how easy it was to swing at least some public opinion just read d comments

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/news/Unions_concerned_over_State_of_Emergency-128224043.html

dat rite dere is what the unions have to look to reverse when soe done if they figure they want 2 get anything from negotiations. dey real lucky if they could get anything off d ground b4 year end.
