SSD Caching options
« on: February 25, 2012, 10:26:50 AM »
I recently drooled over the Z68 chipset, realizing that you can use any SSD 20GB to 64GB to use as an caching drive via Intel own software called Intel Smart Response Technology.  There is even a gigabyte motherboard that has a built-in 20GB SSD for exactly this purpose (and one minus the mSATA drive, just the slot).

From reviews it seems to work very well

Thankfully, there are also options for those who are not using the Z68 chipset. Any 64GB or less-sized SSD and sfotware that works across any chipset platform, but will most likley require Windows 7.

There are currently four SSDs that are covering this option:

OCZ Synapse Cache SATA III 2.5" SSD
http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/caching-solutions.html
64GB drive with Dataplex software

Crucial Adrenaline Solid State Cache Drive
http://www.crucial.com/store/ssc.aspx
50GB drive, also with Dataplex software.

Corsair Accelerator Solid State Cache Drive
http://www.corsair.com/ssd/accelerator-series-ssd-cache-drives.html
Available in 30GB, 45GB and 60GB sizes, and uses Dataplex software. Only drive using SATA2 interface

Sandisk ReadyCache Solid State Cache Drive
http://www.sandisk.com/products/ssd/sata/readycache/
Available in 32GB, and uses ExpressCache software.

This will be a nice way to avoid any major hardware upgrades for some time to come.

Crucial's SSD cache drive is now released, so I update the opening post.

Any first time adopters? Were it not such a tight financial time for me,  and the constant blue screens my PC keeps gettign as of late, I'd have jumped on at already.

The FAQ on Crucial's site in interesting:

..and now Corsair has added their cache drives into the mix as well, see OP.
All drives are now under US$100. Time for an upgrade, I say!

I say just buy a proper 120 GB SSD and done yes.

Somebody showed me a Mushkin SATA III 120 GB SSD on Amazon for $119 US.

If that ain't a sweet deal made of win, I don't know what is...

That scenario I would reserve for a laptop, which I have already done with a 128GB. And already I find myself having to watch disk space usage.

in my desktop, Is either at least a 256GB SSD as the OS drive(at upwards of US$300, which I just don't have) or go with the cache drive (which is cheaper at barely US$100).
