Wont something like this be much simpler and less power hungry while maintaining a lot of the functionality that big ass box would offer??

I was thinking the same thing as awesome. This would be perfect for a mini android device.

What need have you for a full blown desktop setup in the car?

What is the use case?

oh thats not problem
i will gladly answer that

first of the multimedia experience will be amazing..

Google Centrafuse- that software will be able to utilize the touchscreen capability very well by giving a customized CAR interface. it will look exactly how newer vehicles are coming these days with touch screen main displays

then there is the use of the carputer for OBD readout of my van's vitals.

few other pc related wants and DOs that you guys can figure out... would be great for waiting on the mrs. or a friend to reach/ finish do something whatever

and then the main reason

i really want to do this..... and i have the know how and material to do it :laughing7:

I can see chinee's idea behind the Car pc, all these years i've been eyeing that LCD screen that used to be by Nesle and i've wondered. "Hey, wouldn't be cool to run a High def Wifi hookup to that screen to run a SF or Tekken while we wait for the light to change?" hmmm....  :awesome:

Then again, you could drop the touchscreen and invest in this instead.... http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1523379957/oculus-rift-step-into-the-game

I'm too paranoid about bandits these days. You have to keep that well out of view of prying eyes. I know you mentioned it would be hidden but I prefer not to leave expensive equipment in my vehicle. If I wasn't so paranoid I'd want to try out something like this as well hehe.

I think the carputer will be the least of his worries if that vehicle gets flooded out.

A decade ago, used to run with a laptop in the car powered by a transformer to get 110v out of the cigarette lighter.

Running winamp mostly. Poor mans "mp3 deck and in dash entertainment" before such things were common down here. lol

I stopped because of what woody highlighted. Crime got out of control.

Laptops and such were being snatched out of vehicles left right and center. Windows getting bashed in normal normal in broad daylight.
