Nvidia vs AMD gpu's. Which is better? Hint; its not AMD
« on: January 04, 2013, 07:12:11 AM »
If anyone was still in doubt as to the superior player in the market right now, look no further:

Quote
I think the occasional hitches on the Radeon are pretty easy to see. The big, obvious slowdowns only happen every so often, but the GeForce avoids them—just as the test results told us.

Remember, the Radeon HD 7950 turns in an average of 69 FPS in this very test run, a rate that has been considered "good" in FPS terms for years. This is why measuring frame latencies, not just average rates, is so crucial. FPS averages don't capture what's happening from moment to moment.

And look, they now start to think about doing something to fix the issues...

http://techreport.com/news/24136/driver-software-to-be-tweaked-to-reduce-radeon-frame-latencies-in-series-of-updates

I wouldnt lie, that pair of HD5850's were probably the worst cards I have ever had the displeasure of running. Not ketching me in a hurry again, AMD.

Not to mention the frequent driver issues.
Lord knows AMD have given me my fair share of those.  Not trying to be a glutton for that kind of punishment in a hurry.   :(

Pre-Kepler, amd's raw horsepower was enough to justify it over nvidia.
But with the advancements in kepler, namely, TPD, Termals, Adaptive V-Sync, Turbo-Boost, make for a much smoother gaming experience.

I've never watched average fps in any review, i always look to see the minimum spikes, which better reflect what real-world gaming performance and your experience would be like.

Heres to hoping amd get their act together, becuase between d licks Intel and Nvidia putting on them in both cpu and gpu fronts, d future for us not looking too bright without the competition amd provides.

At the blistering high end, maybe these things have an impact.

Check the specs they ran those tests at? INSANE

From where I sit (with a single 6950), at respectable high end settings, everything runs just smooth.

No driver issues that I am aware of. There is one mouse pointer thing that happens with DOTA but I've read that it happens with Nvidia cards too.

Just saying.

^^ what you quatifying as smooth? beacseu i know men who thought their borderlands 2 was running "smooth" only to have them install fraps and realise they game running at 30fps, but to their eyes it was "smooth".

And i make them take off certain graphics options to get a constant 60fps then they saw what "smooth" was, and they still din have it buttery smooth cuase in big battles the fps will still spike below 60, and for someone who acustom to high end, that aint smooth to me atal.

So what u calling smooth?

smooth is to my eyes, smooth.

I don't need a graph to tell if my game framing or lagging.

Got two "gaming rigs" at home. One is under powered (my son's) and it frames / stutters. As expected.

The other, with the i7, 240GB SSD and 6950 plays smooth.

Some ppl dont need graphs to tell them they game laggin, but the point im making is.
The 2 people in question was not aware they game was laggin because they eyes never see different.

So as far as they were concerned, they game was not laggin, or anything of the sort, is only after they see how the game suppose to be running dey realise it was infact lagging.

D same way how ppl dont know that the quality of a normal dvd is rubbish until they expereince bluray.
Same with hifi audio, same with mostly anything really. Until u experience better, u wont really know what u using had a problem to begin with.

Graphs is a scientific and accurate way, to remove perceivied opinion, to let u know, weather your game is performing the best the game is capable of. So if your fps spiking downwards, and your eyes cant detect a difference, it may be because u so accustom to it u dont even know what better (smooth) suppose to look like.

I had numerous driver issues with AMD dual-card/dual-GPU configs in the past.  In quite a few of those instances an OS re-install was the only way to resolve it.
Not cool...at all...especially when I have a million and one games to install.

Never had those kinda issues with AMD drivers really, in the past i could remember having them, but as of 5 and 6000 serieis, amd treat me pretty nice. But the drivers were nothing special, just served to make d cards work, and raw power took over. Nvidia's kepler line, has some special bits i already mentioned that edge them out over the competition. I have no loyaltee's when it comes to hardware nah, whoever better i gone.

AMD Athlong XP were the days, but intel Core 2 duo line just molest AMD. and the i7 line, juss finish dem off. Killer Instincts Ultra followed by ah Mortal Kombat Fatality yes.

In an unrelated note in the AGP days i was only nvidia and first PCI-E card was nvidia as well had 0 issues then went to a 4870 no issues except the occassional drivers and Jan 2012 got a 6870 which has died on me about 4 days ago which worked perfectly till then so right now I'm RMAing the card and wondering if to buy a 650 Ti or a 660 or stick with Sapphire and see what replacement they send.....

lol arc will always be arc...

It will take me  awhile to forgive AMD for the wickedness they do me.

Out of my two 4870's, one of the fans went bad (highly annoying bearing noise) after about a year. So ok, these things happen, no biggie.

Boom, got two 5850's, same fcukin loud bearing noise after just months of usage.

Had numerous Nvidia cards before that, one of which I had f@h running on 24/7 for some months, never had an issue.

Not to mention the load of crossfire issues, which game giving some problem or the other, the most annoying of which was in Bad Company 2, fps would dip to like 10 every time I throw a grenade...that was with both the 4870 and 5850 crossfire having the SAME issue.

Yeah amd thanks but no thanks.

That's what you get for going SLI.

It good. lol

Single card AMD has been nothing but bliss here. Knock on wood.

@ Awesome, what were the brands of those cards that had the fans failing and making that awful noise?

Captain, doh forget d NVIDIA fiasco that happen when they release a certain driver that literally burnt up everybody 7800 cards, I mean, literal smoke here, widespread all over d world. That's what made me jump to amd. So doh think NVIDIA inocnet atal, I actually had worse history with NVIDIA and ski, than amd and crossfire till Kepler. Knock on wood.

lol, I'll hardly call the people responsible for all this 3D gaming goodness "evil".

Harsh boy Awesome.

Both Nvidia and ATI have brought some amazingly powerful cards to market for cheap over the years and to this very day.

It would be hard (and reckless) of me to just bad mouth one at this stage. They aren't perfect but far from evil.

PC (and console) gaming would not be what it is if not for these two. Should one fall.......*shudder*

Boy nvidia is rel SHIT when they ready boy stueps.
I update to d latest nvidia driver recently, d 310.90. and since then, my Starcraft 2 stuttering, and even stick once, to d point i had to hard reset my machine.

Playing dirt 3 tonight, d thing crash dirt, audio and menus in dirt working, but d visual image just frozen, again had to hard reset, when i restart, dirt 3 crash on launch, dirt 2 crash, skyrim crash, so ah say ok, maybe is ah steam thing, STARCRAFT 2! CRASH! unexpected error, i was like wah d ass is dis.

I rollback d nvidia driver, everything work, stuesp, 310.90 is a pack of balls, and a perfect example of both gpu companies doing shit with their drivers when they ready. Which is better, nvidia or amd? NONE! becuase both of them does do crap when they ready.

In terms of hardware right now, nvidia is better, but that latest driver rel sour me.

No issues here.

310.90 actually improved performance across the board for me.  :happy0203:

Well thats the reason i install it, cause i see it increasing performance in certain games, but then again i running 3 cards, so i wouldn't see that performance increase even if it was there. What i did see though was instability.

Thought it could be related to sli, but i disable that and still no joy. That 310.90 staying right there oui.
Ill update my driver in another 2-3 revisions, not like i "need" to do it now anyways.
