Saxman's first Hackintosh
« on: March 03, 2013, 09:22:18 PM »
So in the aftermath of decommissioning my "true" gaming rig, I decided on inspiration from a coworker to build me a ITX-based PC and run Macintosh OS X on it.

This is the outcome after over a month of testing and reading:

The specs:

Silverstone SUGO SG05 case w/450W PSU
Gigabyte GA-H77-WiFi motherboard
Intel Core i3-3220 @ 3.2 GHz
8GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3-1600
WD 1TB Caviar Blue (to run Win 7)
Sandisk RadyCache 32GB SSD cache drive
Toshiba 320GB Laptop Drive (to install Mountain Lion)
XFX GeForce GTX650 Ti (preceded by GeForce 8800GS)
HP laptop DVD-RW w/Lightscribe
Mini PCIE Wifi adapter (broadcom chipset)

It took a lot of research and reading to get Snow Leopard installed. especially as it doesnt properly support sandy//ivy bridge CPUs, but it worked with graphics and all.

With collaboration  form a coworker we go our respective 'macs' up and running on Mountain Lion. And I am proud to say, just about everything works: boot, sleep shutdown, sound even gaming

Credit to the TonyMacX86 forums for all the work they been doing with guides on doing this.

Pics and more details to come...

My sentiment exactly.

Why sully good PC hardware with a Mac os.....especially after decommissioning a decent gaming rig.

Some men just want to see the world burn.

This is a nice project!

One question though. Why??

Why not?

I was planning on running this in a VM just to get reacquainted with the OS, but I'm very interested in the thought of running OSX on some unused x86 hardware lying around the office.

This is a nice project!

One question though. Why??

Why?? Because it can be done!!!

But really I was curious about doing it for a while now. I wanted to see just what all the fuss was about the OS X operating system, and just how feasible it is to actually pull something like this off.

It was fun to see a good friend of mine almost piss himself when my tiny PC basically put his imac in a mid-life crisis

Of course do note that Apple would throw a hissy fit as their EULA forbid installing OSX on non-apple hardware (yet you can run Windows on a Mac)

In any case, Windows on one drive and OS X on another, so I have the best of both words. It defaults to Windows, but is just to use the boot menu to BIOS and I load OS X from the other drive.

Netizen, I shall teach you the "Hackintosh no Justsu", lol

^^^ This.

I actually have a 'spare' Core 2 Duo system lying around.
I'll have to do some research to see if it can work.

Very nice project indeed.

I was interested in doing something like this as well.

Just to add to my knowledge of operating systems really, may add value to my work experience i guessing.

Exactly...for a young techie. ...I can understand wanting to play with the mac os out of curiosity.

Saxman I figured was a little more seasoned than that.

Thought he had another reason...for example....needed to run app x that is only available on mac.

Carry on

Bu wha de mu....?? I think that was lil out of line there, sir.

Excuse me for being young at heart despite my age (and having neither wife nor child).

Who knows? doing this might prove useful if someone comes to me with a mac issue one day (the horror!)
