lol, well that's true.

Every game will suffer with some sort of lag every now and then. As lag has many causes.

Very safe statement, I have to agree.

Still....as gamers it is in our interest to minimize lag using every tool at our disposal for the best multiplayer experience.

It's our fault for being born in a different region? Besides from the connection speeds i hear some americans say they have, my 15Mbps i'm greatful for. Of course it have the fiber optic 60Mbps men to jealous but still trinidad have it alright.

Yea you have flow right?  Blink is a different story. Its expensive for a simple 10mbs connection which is the limit for where I live. I guess in some parts of trinidad you guys have great options with Internet.  I have a 4mbs connection since the upload speed for this and the 10mbs is the same.  I didn't think it was worth paying the extra cash

You're both right, 10mbs is more than enough for gaming (and sharing with other family members) and it is on par with what many foreigners are using themselves. Flow's Turbo 20 and up even surpasses performances of internet connections I used while in the states and the UK. So we not badly off at all in that respect.

4mbs is good enough if you're the only person in your house on the net. If anyone else touches that connection while you're playing without any epic QOS enabled, you're going to lag hard.

And we should not have to suffer horrible latency because we are born in a different region. That wasn't the case years ago. Dedicated servers meant you could host games in your region and enjoy blistering fast ping times like everyone in the world.

That is still the case for some games (CounterStrike, Left4Dead, Team Fortress, etc...) but others have "commercialized" their dedicated servers and made them only available in certain regions (Battlefield, CoD on PC). Forcing us to lobby for a regional host (work in progress) and even then...we would still have to PAY to run the server.

As you can see from that graph, even a modest 1mbs upstream connection can host a 12 man counter strike server comfortably.

So lack of bandwidth isn't the problem for us in Trinidad at all.

I have been swearing by the asus line of routers recently.  The RT-N66U to be specific

QoS works by throttling your uplink primarily and thereby preventing any one application from saturating your internet connection.

For example, if I have a Flow Turbo 20 with a 2mbps uplink, my QoS would offer only a percentage of that to my network. Say 75%...for an effective uplink of 1.5mbps

You're probably thinking, who in their right mind would want to reduce their bandwidth....

Turns out, the end result is a "smoother" internet experience for everyone because no one application/service can monopolize your entire connection anymore.

Playing Dota 2 without QoS and no one sharing my internet is fine. My ping will be around 112ms

If someone starts streaming heavy videos from another PC on the network, it would shoot up to 800ms+ (without QoS). Absolutely unplayable. Particulary devastating are VOIP and Video apps like Skype and Facetime. They soak up your bandwidth like whoa.

With QoS enabled, the effect is considerably reduced. Your ping would still increase but to around 160 - 180ms...which is acceptable.

Better still, those routers would allow you to see exactly which device is chewing up your bandwidth in realtime so you could block them altogether, lol.

The fun doesn't end there, you can go further and customize the QoS rules to give your specific gaming PC full bandwidth/highest priority and leave the rest of the computers on your network to endure the reduction. Also, you could get more technical and prioritize the packets for your favourite game by their specific TCP/UDP ports.

Lots of options.

thanks will def look into that router and settings as whenever i game i always disconnect my router and have it directly connected. i would upgrade my internet connection but the blink max upload speed is the same between the 4mb and 10mb which is 768kbs. u think the 10 will make a difference?

yo blink is real robbery inno

Ouch. The 10 will help with download speed but not really with gaming.

Great for downloading the actual game as quickly as possible.

Thats the difference between waiting 4 hours to suck down a 20gb titanfall install over origin as opposed to 12 hours. Lol

No surprise there. One of the game main points is how open it is.

What engine are they using... Unreal 3, right?

Yeah...that'll pretty much run on eva-ree-thang.

Respawn ain't stupid...they want as much people to be able to buy it as possible.

...and apparently a heavily modified one at that.

Yeah, that one too will scale nicely on all types of hardware, and 'just work' so the devs can focus on other things.

It certainly won't look as good as CryEngine 3, but I can understand why they didn't choose that, or even Frostbite 3.
Using those may have placed limitations on the platforms that they could develop for.

Source engine is much older, more scalable, and more devs are familiar with it.

Frostbite 3 is a friggin nightmare to work with. No documentation ......atall. Plus EA wouldn't share it because its "secret tech" and Respawn is still independent, they like Bungie. They are gun for hires for the highest bidder. Titanfall is EA exclusive but the next one could be owned by SONY or whomever give them the money to make something.

...but isn't the exclusivity agreement for 'the life of the title'?

What that says to me is that they can only develop 'Titanfall' for Microsoft.

Correct me if I'm wrong of course.
