RAM problem
« on: June 24, 2005, 10:54:18 AM »
is there some sort of ram limit on dell machines? i'm trying to stick 2 512mbs sticks of sdram in a dimension 4300 machine... but i get a blue screen everytime i try to boot. so for the moment i'm just running with one 512 stick and a 128 stick. i haven't seen any bios upgrades for my motherboard past 2001, so i'm guessing i don't need a bios upgrade... anyone ever came across this problem?

It could be a hardware incompatibilty with the RAM u bought. I've gotten that once or twice before esp with mass produced (dell, compaq, hp, etc) computers. Check to see what are the recommended RAM manufacturers Micron or crucial is usually on that list so that'd be a safe bet as opposed to some generic brand. Since u said it works with a 128MB stick we are at least sure the slot itself is not malfunctioning, The fact that u also stated that u have a 512 in there says it should at least take another 512MB.

depends on the mobo. Some mobos have trouble with double sided dimms in certain slots, some have a max limit, and some can't handle certain speeds or cas latencies. Dells are not nice for upgrading.
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?
