looking into dsl and need some questions answered
« on: April 14, 2006, 10:17:28 PM »
if i was to buy the require dsl mode/router from a private vendor and got him to set ip up ,config as needed to work wit tstt . can i use my username and password (that  is a shared pw where 3 users can be on at the same time )  or will tstt force me on some stupid monthly fee for another account ...

if so ,how does it work wen u finish buy from a private vendor and he finish sets it up .. if i wont be able to do wat i ask above (using a current unlimited username and pw), will i have to go in tstt and ask for a account for jus the new pw and username - wat will be the cost if this is the case ?..

Ok. Here's how it works. You cant just simply get a router and connect DSL. You have to go in to TSTT and sign up for the service, for which there is a certain waiting period. You can either transfer your existing dial-up account to s DSL account or make a new account. As far as I know, there is no option to have a 3 user password for DSL. You could dial up to the net with the same DSL user name and pw even when the DSL is in use though. You have the choice of taking a contract for 1,2 or 3 years which will cut down your monthly bill a bit or you can be a month to month customer which will allow you to back out of the service at any time. Of course this option will be more expensive than the longer term contracts. When they done scratch dey @$$ and decide to provide you with the service, they will enable digital signals to be transferred through your phone line and shortly afterwards call to inform you when someone will come to bring the router and show you how to set up etc. I don't know if this setup is still free but up to late last year it was. After u up and running, you'll want to tell them to take down the firewall of the connction wich will allow you to use your favourite p2p apps. At this point you have the option of pitching their router in the bush (dont pitch it too far cuz they might want it back after you revoke the service) and use your own.  That's pretty much it. Don't worry, you dont have to be a rocket scientist to set up a router.

Yeah, what The_Daaak_Neo said...

You can't use a dial-up account on a dsl modem and expect service. (Tried that already)
Your line has to be converted to digital.

All the other points he covered (wrt username, account, billing, discounts)

thx for all the info ..

The_Daaak_Neo  - as i put in the first post ill be getting the modem from a private vendor
and there isnt a 3 person dsl pw ...its some plan for unlimited tstt had where 3 can be on at the same time wit a unlimited..so we all jus chip in to pay the monthly bill since we all use it

Voyd  - if i was to get them to convert the line to digital for me without applying to a package and all dat crap..lets say for some crazy reason they jus charge me to convert lines to digital ...then can i use my unlimited username and pw to go online using dsl and not my dial up modem ?

Nope. No plan that I know of will allow 3 persons to log on at the same time. The only possibility is that if u have a couple of neighbours that want internet access, y'all can chip in for the total bill and set up a wireless network where everyone can access it. That will soon become a pain though cuz u wont be getting full bandwith as it wll have to be split in three which will only give each person about 10KB/s to play with. You MUST sign up and pay for a DSL account. Can't use ordinary diaup un & pw.

ok well about the username and pw not be able to be used wit dsl, that sucks..however wen i do get the lines to be converted to digital i can always try it since the account wit unlimited pw is really paid by my uncle

as for the 3 person unlimited pw ...trust me it exist and no,the bandwidth speed and connection isnt terrible ..its very  very normal , tstt had this a long time now cuz i have it a long time now lol..i use it ,my uncle and my cuz who lives wit his parents ...so if u never heard about a account for unlimited pw in which 3 can be on at the same time, now u know bout it and know dat u dont lose any connection speed

by the way can somebody send me a pic of how the logon box or watever it is looks ..where u enter info to connect

Somehow I think you're getting confused.

Yes there is a 3 user unlimited password, but that's for Dial-Up ALONE

There is a way to use your DSL login to dial-up to the net from another location, but it's a bit tricky from my experience.

What Daaak_Neo was trying to say about the bandwidth was with respect to
The only possibility is that if u have a couple of neighbours that want internet access, y'all can chip in for the total bill and set up a wireless network where everyone can access it. That will soon become a pain though cuz u wont be getting full bandwith as it wll have to be split in three which will only give each person about 10KB/s to play with.

Sharing the dsl with 3 people will be a pain in de arse, maybe two of you can share the dsl via wireless or something so, and the third can just stick to the dial-up. But how you gonna work that out financially is up to you.

And as for the "logon box".... I'll just assume you're asking to see where we dsl users login to the net right? Well you see, that's the beauty of DSL, you'll never have to "login" to use the net, once the modem/router is on, you're online, 24/7... Your password and stuff is saved in the modem/router configuration which you (or some TSTT tech) would have setup the first time you get the service installed. ^_^

I can see that you want to try a "fast one", but hard luck, it's not that simple.

Just to break it down for you again,
1. Apply for the DSL with TSTT
2. They'll check your line to see if you can get service
Provided you can get service on your line
3. You can either have your dial-up account converted to a dsl account, or apply for another account just for the DSL.
4. They come and set it up for you (trust me when I say, if they're doing it for free, then let them do it for you)
5. Once the service is up and running, you can then switch their lame modem/router for any other that you're supposed to be getting...

Hope that puts things into perspective for you  -_-

lol, be nice computerman.

google is a great tool but it doesn't help if you don't ask the right questions.

That's something only human interaction could provide.

Not to mention, even when you do ask the right question on google...you'll get 1000+ different results. Wading through those is another task in itself.

I'm still trying to figure out why the cached domain logon feature won't work with my Samba PDC on XP SP2 clients.

Next stop, richjob immc.

LMAO @ man trying to get DSL for free... dread you is really a Trini... geez. Man your plan might work if you know the right ppl in TSTT both technical and admin... however you are trying way too hard to get something for nothing. We can't condone piracy of any kind here and I think you should just weigh all the smart choice plans and dsl packages carefully and work out whats best for your situation. Doh get me wrong, if you get it to work kudos to you, just doh ever get catch, is not like yuh stealing cable here. Anyways I have to also agree that 3 ppl on 1 DSL without the right bandwidth abirtrator will SUCK, cause I mean a 256k line eh hard to eat up. 1 man downloading and the other 2 will SALT. if it were a 512 that'd prolly work out fine, otherwise 10k per user is better than dial up... but depending on the cost (smart choice + monthly fee) it could work out against you. Good luck all the same though.

We understand exactly what you were saying and we kept telling you that it wont work. Dialup account passwords CANNOT[/u] be used to connect DSL even with a DSL enabled line.
