Nintendo utters plaintive Wii oh Wii oh Wii No Revolution, just a pith takeBy Nick Farrell: Friday 28 April 2006, 07:24GAME MAKER Nintendo has decided that its fairly coolly named 'Revolution' console prototype will be known as Wii when it hits the shops.We first thought that at least the name would be pronounced 'weye', as in Weye Pod, and not as some commentators have suggested 'wee' because that would be really taking the pith.But alas, with a complete straight face, the marketing department of Nintendo has really opted for the word that in Scotland means 'small' and in the UK means 'to urinate'.The reason that they have come to this conclusion is that the Nintendo marketing department tells us the name is meant to emphasise that "this console is for everyone". Well everyone does have a wee at sometime we suppose. Perrin Kaplan, Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Affairs for Nintendo of America told CNN that all the other consoles have an extension of their current names; Nintendo's Wii is a new leap to something different. Yep a whole list of embarrassing headlines. "A lot of thought went into the name". Well you always think of having a Wii when you have had a skinful so perhaps they should have let him go along with the daft wally who rubber stamped it."Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak," the company said in its flash presentation of the name. "No confusion. No need to abbreviate". Nope we have to admit a Wii is a Wii no matter what you call it.The unusual spelling is meant to symbolize both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play. A marketing spokesman said that criticism was not unexpected, given Wii's uniqueness. I for one will look forward to Nintendo's number follow up portable console f-ART, which will mimic the design of the artistic Apple.
