interesting read. remember someone brought up the used car market when this was brought up a while ago about ppl adopting an online pass to help prevent used game sales

lemme quote a section of the article
Quote
I understand the need to purchase used games, especially when used game prices are used as a barometer for a consumer to dictate what they think a product is worth to them. If Game X comes out at $60 new but it's just not that good, a gamer not entirely eager to get his hands on the title may decide "you know what, I'd rather pay $40 for this game when it's used in a couple of months." That's fair. That's logical. Just don't expect to get the entire package you would have had you bought the game new. And of course, for games not of this generation, buying them used is the only way to get your hands on them (with the exception of games that are available digitally). A thriving used market for older games is great, and something I've taken advantage of many, many times in my life.

But if you were to go into a car dealership and demand a used vehicle for a cheaper price than what that same car goes for new, yet wanted all of the perks that came with the new car, you'd be laughed out of the showroom. You can have that brand new Chevy Volt with a fresh battery, OnStar support, minimal mileage, a clean and crisp interior and an impressive warranty. Or you can buy that Chevy Volt used, save some cash, and deal with the fact that the battery has degraded a bit, OnStar has been turned off, the interior has some stains, and the warranty has been downgraded.

In other words, why is the expectation that when you're buying a used game you should get the exact same product you get when you buy the game new? You get what you pay for. And in the case of Resistance 3, you're paying for the single-player game without online access. Those who choose to buy the game new, as it was intended, get the whole package.

Interesting metaphor, I understand that they simply trying to earn more revenue but that example is not entirely relevant since unlike a car a game disc doesn't have that kind of wear and tear. Digital code is well digital, years could pass by and that used disc will be giving you the same experience you would have gotten if bought on day one (well unless the disc scratched up/disintegrated)

Since we are talking pretty much about paying for online access the real question is if online access is part of the game or is it an extra premium service that people should be paying for ie. used game buyers. Don't think it is really a discussion anymore anyway seeing that more and more publishers going with the online pass route.

As was said before the used market won't really be significant once more games go digital eg. On steam we can't "sell" our used digital downloads right?

I was the one who made that analogy, and I stand by it.

You self stated that SOCOM 4's way was the best: you still get
access to the online component
, but if you want access to better
kit, then pay up.  That, I don't have a problem with, but when
you tell me I have to pay just to access the online at all after
you already made your money with the initial sale...no...not having it.

That article being rather selective with their analogy.  If you buy a used car,
and the manu tell you 'borse...yuh need to pay we before yuh could drive
this car eh', would you still buy that car?  I know I wouldn't.

There will always be people who don't want to pay full price for anything.  So what?

Make your bloody game worthy of my $60 US.  Make those used-game buyers WANT to buy it new.

No. You get the 'pro' code free when you buy the game new, which gives you access to much better guns and equipment straight off the bat.

If you happen to buy the game used, you can still play online, but if you're serious about the game you can purchase a pro code and 'trade up' so to speak.

That kind of arrangement I can live with...but to totally debar used-game buyers from ANY online content unless they pay a fee is just downright greedy.

guess is how u look at it
i see no problem with the online pass
and yes i do agree socom did it best, chances are anyway if ur serious about the game u would buy it new

whether or not the game is worth 60$ ppl will still buy it used if its cheaper and u know that arc, be real.

IF i is a man see BF3 used and gettin all the features for a lil 200 by sheltech u think i wont buy it used? u might think differently but dont think what YOU would do think ppl in general and ppl in general are cheap and would look to save money and dont really care for the whole "supporting the devs" thing. Once them get their fix they good.

http://www.gamespasm.com/2011/07/08/hands-on-with-multiplayer-battlefield-3-on-the-ps-3/

so PS3 BF3 is meh?
would have liked party size, squad comms and overall player count confirmed :(

did u guys try any of the options available from the ps3 system recovery menu? i.e the System File Restore or the Rebuild Database option. The prob may be related to corrupted files on the hard drive. I have similar probs, but my system shuts down during gameplay... rarely on startup.

To access the System Recovery Menu hold the power button till u hear 3 beeps then release, system will shut down. Press power button again (to restart system) until u hear 3 more beeps (last beep is actually two quick beeps in succession). PS3 will now enter system recovery menu where the following options will be made available:
1.Restart System
2.Restore Default Settings
3.Restore File System
4.Rebuild Database
5.Restore PS3 System
6.System Update.
I recently found out about this (hope im not the only one who didn't know about this, lol).
