2005 a bummer for the PC
« on: December 29, 2004, 07:18:54 PM »
Other than dual cores, which I predict will be a whopping disappointment for desktop users, almost nothing is going to happen of note in the consumer space. Lets look at the big guy first, Intel. For Intel, it is a what you got is what you will get, with pretty much nothing new on the desktop, just minor changes here and there, mostly from stuff migrating down the food chain.

so what
hardware cant change drastically every year
software is being developed
which is a good thing for the pc
pc games get better and better every year
so i think consoles not goin to blow pc's out of the water

DONT HATE THE PLAYER
HATE THE GAME!!!

you are forgetting :  windows 64 ! 64bit programs , the R500 , ATI's version of SLI , turbo cache/Hyper Memory on ALL The cards, not just the low end ones  .... Intel is releasing dual cores for the desktop, a 2.8 ghz dual core for 225 USd....   and other goodies we haven't yet heard of .....

2.8ghz dual core for 225US? Thats impossible.

2 cpus @ 1.4ghz each perhaps...but not 2.8.

Even so 225us is alot for so little overall performance.

That said, all those other techs are but incremental upgrades which will be mucho expensive and give us very little reason to upgrade. Very few will bother.

As far as I am concerned the only thing we have to look forward too is cheaper and faster a64s...

Tech Development is slowing down...you cant deny it. We are reaching limits of materials/techs which we won't get past any time soon.

Umm where did gaming on the console creap into this thread from?... anyways.. I agree with synth on the cheaper A64's thats always a good thing... as for 64-bit goodness I look foward to it, but its full rewards won't begin to be reaped til later on maybe 2006. If un into servers and stuff it may be good though, dual core opter0ns!!! as for 1ntel I will shy from that like the plague even if they manage to stay in their 100W envelope.... actually I think its higher... but anyways... I think it will be a boring year.

The IQ difference between 32bit and 64bit processors in 64bit designed games cannot be seen with the naked eye..... you need an algorithm to see the difference.....
Consoles always have and always will lag far behind in IQ vs a high or even medium end PC . An Xbox has 64mb of RAM total... in order to shove all 512mbs of doom III down its mouth you need to skimp on texture resolution as you can't have the video chip swapping to the hard drive.
the consoles LOOK great cause a TV helps hide alot of the games flaws, low poly count, low res textures etc.  .

I'd love to see a cheap A64 myself,  the .90nm a64s are 84mm2 in size ! same size as a Tbred athlon or a Sempron , they say SOI  makes it cost more... but i don't think so, my athlon XP mobile is supposedly built on SOI and costed the same as any athlonXP .

nobodys saying that consoles are better than pcs hell no, the point is that consoles are easier to use, much more cost effective, and have a long shelf life, than pcs (assuming that the pc is not upgraded) from a gaming standpoint.

There is a feeling consoles give that pcs can never replace...well until consoles becomes pcs anyways.

The difference is getting harder to distinguish and its inevitable they will become one eventually.

Nvidia has no new models to release this year, even next year their cards will just be overclocked models of currant cards on a lower process.....
ATI will pull ahead unless Nvidia beats its pricing, 200 US for a x800 with 12pipes and 128mb , 300 for an X800XL with 16 pipes and 256mb ....  100 US less than the Nvidia equivilant  .
later next year @ti will release their SM3.0 cards and their own variant of SLI..... nvidia will maintain what they have with some modifications..... i doubt nvidia will last long unless they can maintain a lead in performance , or technlogy... or ATI fumbles (they  never did  before) .
This coming from the proud owner of a Geforce 6 , Nvidia is good, ATI is better !
